6 Dance Tips for Practicing At Home

Dancing is a major part of professional cheerleader. As an aspiring pro cheer candidate, it’s essential to find a local studio where you can perfect your skills. But let’s go beyond the studio. How can you bring your dance technique to the next level even from the comfort of your own home? Let’s dive into these practice methods.

1. Do it at peak energy times.

Practicing when you’re exhausted at the end of the day isn’t a good idea. A lack of energy can take a toll on your focus. Make sure to identify times when you’re naturally more energetic! Avoid sleep deprivation as well because less sleep can decrease your energy the entire day.

2. Take a video of yourself and study it.

Record yourself dancing and try to analyze areas that you’re struggling with. If you have a close friend who’s also into dancing or someone you know who’s auditioning, show the video and get honest feedback. Don’t be afraid to get expert opinion because it makes you better!

3. Add stretching to your daily routine.

It may seem basic, but yes, stretching is as important as working out. How does stretching help dancers? Increased flexibility is a huge benefit. Stretching moves your muscles, especially those often-neglected body parts like your piriformis muscle - a small muscle located deep in your buttocks.

4. Strengthen your core.

Dancers need to have good core strength in order to maintain balance and an excellent posture. Pilates exercises really work your core, and they need no equipment at all. Do the Single Leg Stretch, Criss-Cross, and Scissor Kick.

5. Repetition is a must.

Remember the most important thing to do as a dancer: Repetition accelerates memory! After you have learned new choreography, execute it at home right away. Take a quick break, and then repeat it in the evening. Do it when you wake up. If you’re not dancing at home, think about it. It helps with the memorization process in your brain.

6. Tell yourself you can!

Most importantly, motivate yourself always. You need to be the first person to tell yourself that you’re doing a fantastic job - that you’re actually making progress. Negative statements are not going to help at all. Get excited about dancing by watching new dance videos published by your dream cheer team. You’ll find so many videos on YouTube!
