6 Easy Ways to Improve Your Posture

Confidence and fitness are two of the common requirements that pro cheer team judges look for in auditionees. To appear highly confident and fit, it is essential that your standing and sitting posture is good. A good posture makes you look proud, healthy, strong, and formal.

These scoring points will be observed during the dance showcase and business interview portions. And there’s no better way to start improving your posture by following the strategies below.

1. Avoid slouching

Whether at home or work, avoid leaning forward and looking down for most of the time when sitting on your chair. You should also invest in ergonomic seats that are designed to support your lumbar vertebrae and neck.

If buying a new chair isn’t an option for you, try to sit straight without leaning on a chair’s back. Then, memorize the feeling of sitting straight so you can mimic the posture when you’re working or studying.

2. Check your whole reflection wherever you go

Being busy with daily activities makes us forget to care about our posture while we walk. My solution for this is to always check my reflection on glass windows from business stalls when I’m out. To do it, you must memorize first how your body feels when you’re standing against a wall.

Let the back of your head, shoulder blades, and butt touch the wall. Keep your calves and heel close to the wall but don’t let them touch. Memorize this feeling. Every time you’re out and feel weird, just check yourself on glass mirrors and quickly correct your posture based on how you felt standing against a wall.

3. Don’t recline your seat too much when driving

Being lowrider might be comfortable especially on long drives. But this is one of the reasons why you become a slouch. Always pull your seat close to the steering wheel enough. Don’t lock your legs and always keep your knees at hip level or a little bit above. Better yet, get a neck and lumbar support pillow for your car seat.

4. Exercise and stretch regularly

Brisk walking and running regularly is a good way to straighten your posture because it improves your muscle memory on how to move while keeping your body’s vertical symmetry straight. In terms of stretching like yoga or pilates, these exercises improve the blood circulation in your muscles and bones preventing them from staying rigid.

5. Avoid text neck

This is hard to follow because we subconsciously look down when we open our phones. You must maintain a conscious effort to always keep your phone at eye level, slightly above, or slightly below while you’re using it.

At times, you might look weird to others. But it's a much better compromise than looking like a person that has osteoporosis.

6. Position your computer well

If you use a computer most of the time as you work or study, adjust the monitor in a way that the top bezel is at your eye level. I know most desks are low, making you look downward especially for those using laptops. My take for this is using a laptop cooling pad. A cooling pad elevates your laptop which makes it easy for you to follow a good sitting posture.

Moreover, I highly suggest that you only wear high heels if it’s absolutely necessary and sleep on a firm mattress. Fashion trends nowadays are leaning towards athleisure looks and firm mattresses help you keep your spine’s natural shape as you sleep.
