6 Things You Need to Research About Your Pro Cheer Team

Here at Pro Cheer Life, we’ve always emphasized the essence of researching as part of getting ready for next year’s auditions. Research helps you ace the auditions in many ways. You know what your dance team of choice expects of you. The right knowledge helps you practice and show your best possible self! Need help with this area? Read this guide to find out the specific items you must research.

What to Research About Your Dream Pro Cheer Team (NFL, NBA, and other teams)

I recommend that you take out a piece of paper or notebook and jot down the answers to the following research items...

1. Audition schedule

Never miss this important detail - your team’s audition dates and times! This is your first key to being able to show up and arrive early. Most importantly, it’ll help you plan ahead as to when you should start practicing, buying your outfit, signing up for a fitness class, and more. Some women want to audition for more than one team or league (for example, NFL, NBA, NHL) to increase their chances of getting accepted.

2. Use of pom-poms

Some pro cheer teams use pom-poms while some don’t. Find out if your dream team does. If so, also find out if you’re required to bring pom-poms at the auditions. Dancing with pom-poms is challenging for newbies as they add weight to your arms and must be held correctly. Incorporate pom-poms in your dance practices and soon, you’ll dance with them like a pro!

3. Dance style

A lot of aspiring pro cheerleaders ask me if one sport has a different style than another sport. The answer is that it depends. The best way to determine what style your dream team dances to is to visit their web page. You’ll find videos of their game day performances. YouTube is also a good resource. But in general, NFL dance teams focus more or jazz while NBA dance teams have more athletic dance styles.

4. Possible interview questions

You don’t want to ruin your performance by failing to give the judges good answers during the interviews. The judges might ask you questions about the sports team players, performance in the previous two seasons, the sports organization’s president, and why you want to become a professional cheerleader. My book on pro cheer audition secrets lists all possible interview questions - so better check it out!

5. Look or appearance

What common hairstyles does your dream team use? Do members curl their hair or straighten it? Do some members sport a bob? How about their hair colors? Lip shades? Browse through the most recent photos of a dance team - preferably this year’s photos. Nearly all sports league websites have a section that features individual members of their dance team. Get inspiration from their look.

6. Audition and interview outfit

A lot of pro cheer teams require that candidates wear a separate outfit for the preliminaries and interview portion. Be sure to know this ahead of time so you can purchase the right dancewear and formal attire. Dance teams specify such details on their auditions page and online audition application sheet. Regardless of the requirement, the general rule to remember is that you should look polished at all times.
