8 Secrets to Staying Fit During the Holidays
The holiday season is a great time to relax and be merry. There are all kinds of tempting treats to try - and because of that, it can be challenging for an aspiring pro cheerleader to stay fit.
Just because this year’s holidays are filled with family responsibilities, parties, and delicious food, doesn’t mean you should also take a break with exercise and healthy eating. In fact, you should do the opposite! If you’re serious about staying fit so you can reach your audition goals, here are eight tips that will help:
1. Plan ahead to squeeze in physical activity.
It’s easy to promise yourself that you’re going to exercise no matter how busy you’ll be. But that isn’t always the case. Make sure that you create an actual fitness plan for the day. It can be as simple as squeezing in a 15-minute exercise before lunch or first thing in the morning. When you’re traveling, bring a portable exercise gear such as resistance bands and jump ropes.
2. Get enough sleep at night.
Do you remember the last time you lacked proper sleep? Recall how you felt and reacted to situations. You probably were grumpy throughout the day, didn’t have the motivation to workout, and had very strong cravings for unhealthy foods.
3. Remember that a small good act is better than nothing.
Ditch an all-or-nothing attitude because it doesn’t help with your goals. What perfectionism does is that it prevents you from making progress. Small acts are important because they allow you to gain momentum.
4. Prioritize compound exercises.
Want to get more stuff done in less time? Compound exercises work multiple muscle groups at once. Deadlifts, squats, and biceps curls with cardio are just some examples. Since you’re performing more than one action at the same time, you won’t have to endure long workouts during the holiday season - plus you burn extra calories.
5. Take advantage of seasonal activities.
Find opportunities to move more even when it doesn’t involve a formal workout. One thing you can do is to engage in holiday activities such as ice skating with your family, chopping down a christmas tree, and delivering homemade holiday treats to your loved ones.
6. Eat before heading out.
It’s easy to overindulge in unhealthy treats when you’re not at home and you’re having fun. You can prevent this from happening by eating something before you go outside. That way, you’re full with healthy food.
7. Find an accountability buddy!
Surely, there’s someone out there who’s also planning to stay fit over the holiday season. Why not team up with that person? Schedule a few days each week with that friend or colleague so that you can exercise. Review your progress together. Send motivational reminders.
8. Drink more water.
Staying hydrated over the holiday season is a simple trick to stay fit. Yet, a lot of people don’t do it. The cold weather increases your risk for dehydration. Proper hydration adds volume to your stomach, minimizing the chances of overeating.
Don’t let the holiday season keep you from reaching your pro cheer audition goals. And don’t wait for January to make it happen! You should definitely have fun, but at the same time, stay focused.
