9 Rules of Good Hair Care (No Matter Your Hair Type!)
At some time in your life, you’ve probably wondered why your hair is frizzy with a lot of breakages. You blame your shampoo and sometimes you blame the sun. But in reality, those aren’t the only factors that cause hair damages.
So you find an answer to return your hair to its former glory. You spend money at the salon to fix it. But that’s only a temporary solution as the hair is a collection of dead cells and damages can be beyond repair.
After a few days, the damage is back with more split ends. The true cure for your hair now is time for it to grow long enough and a few snippings on the damaged areas. This time you’ll be more extra careful in caring for it. Below, you’ll find simple yet effective habits to have to prevent your hair from being damaged ever again.
1. Tie your hair loosely with a low knot and wear a hat
Protect your hair from pollution, UV rays, and hot wind by wearing a summer hat or a cap. But first, tie it with loose hair tie styles like the non-braided tuck and cover, low chignon bun, and low knots.
It is important you don’t tie your hair too tight to avoid increasing friction and breakages. And you don’t need to worry about hair loss from wearing hats frequently. It’s just a myth. Stress and a bad diet are also factors that cause hair loss.
2. Dry your hair without heat
A heated hairdryer will strip moisture from your hair causing excessive dryness and frizz. If you’re in a hurry, use the dryer with a hair protectant. It’s better to use a fan when drying your hair.
For more friendly alternatives, wrap your hair in a dry towel and squeeze the water out gently. You can also use paper towels.
3. Sleep in satin pillowcases
Cotton pillowcases are rough in texture and will cause friction as you twist and turn in your bed while sleeping. This will lead to breakages in the long run. Satin pillow covers are more smooth.
4. Bathe in cold water
Hot showers open up your scalp’s pores and hair follicles which wash the natural oils away. This will make your scalp dry and stripped of nutrients that hinders hair growth. Hot water also makes your hair dry. Notice how your hair is rough and brittle while you shower in hot water? That’s a danger sign for breakage.
Shower not in freezing temperature but in cool to warm water.
5. Start your shower with a scalp scrub
Using a scalp scrub first on your head will help in exfoliating washing all the grime and dust. This allows our scalp’s natural oils to stay on our head’s surface which nourishes our hair and keeps it healthy.
6. Don’t be too harsh when shampooing
When applying shampoo, don’t aggressively scrub it all over your hair. Instead, let your hair down while you bow. Put shampoo on the back of your head. Gently spread the shampoo down to your hair’s tips. The water on your hair will help even the spread.
Rinse the shampoo after. Don’t let it sit for too long. It can lead to dandruff, dry hair, and an itchy scalp.
7. Properly condition your hair daily
The right way to condition your hair is to apply the conditioner on a few inches from your scalp. Letting the conditioner touch your scalp will lead to greasiness and will make the roots oilier than it normally is.
If your hair is too oily, there will be a massive sebum buildup which would attract more dirt, produce more dandruff, and make your hair stickier. The sebum will also clog your hair roots which will cause excessive hair loss.
8. Use a shampoo and conditioner from the same line
Shampoos and conditioners of the same brand have similar formulations. When used together, they will produce the best results, especially for specific hair types. So, the next time you shop for hair care products, don’t buy individual brands.
9. Brush your hair properly twice a day
Start brushing your hair from the tip and work your way up to the scalp. Do this once in the morning and before your sleep for about a minute. Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet. Wet hair is weaker and is more susceptible to breakage. Wait for your hair to dry and use a wide-tooth comb.
The hair is every lady’s crowning glory. It is only right to keep it shiny, smooth, and strong. Protect yours from extreme heat by wearing cover. Keep your scalp nourished with your natural oils and your hair moisturized with a conditioner.
