A Low Glycemic Diet: How Does It Help Your Skin?

Professional cheerleaders serve as ambassadors for their team's brand. And since they represent the team, pro cheerleaders need to maintain a polished appearance during their performance.

Your skin plays a crucial role in your overall appearance. A healthy skin can help you look your best and boost your confidence, which is essential when performing in front of a large audience.

But did you know that your skin's health can be affected by the kind of food you eat? Some experts say that a low glycemic index (GI) diet can help improve your skin and overall appearance.

In this article, we'll explore what a low GI diet is and how it can benefit your skin health.

What Is the Glycemic Index?

The glycemic index (GI) is a measure of how quickly carbohydrates are absorbed and converted into glucose by the body. Basically, the glycemic index ranks the food based on its effect on blood sugar levels.

If the GI value is high (more than 70), it means that the food is quickly absorbed, resulting in a rapid rise in blood sugar concentrations. On the other hand, foods with a low GI (55 or less) are absorbed more slowly, resulting in a slower and more stable increase in blood sugar levels. Medium GI food has a GI value of 56-69.

What Affects the Glycemic Index of Food?

So how do we know if a food has a high or low glycemic index? One thing that you should check is the type of carbohydrates that the food contains. For example, foods that are high in fiber have a lower GI value because fiber slows down the absorption of carbohydrates. On the other hand, simpler carbohydrates like glucose and maltose have high GI.

Another factor to consider is the food processing method used. Highly processed foods like white bread often have a higher GI value than whole foods like fruits and vegetables.

The Benefits of a Low Glycemic Diet for Your Skin

A low glycemic diet has been recommended to diabetic and overweight patients because it helps maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Aside from losing weight and reducing the risk of diabetes, this diet can help maintain clear and healthy skin.

One reason a low GI diet can help maintain clear skin is that it can reduce skin inflammation preventing acne and other skin issues. High GI foods can trigger an inflammatory response in the body, increasing the risk of skin irritation.

A low GI diet can also regulate insulin levels and promote hormonal balance, which is important to achieve that glow. It can also help improve skin elasticity, making your skin look firmer and younger.

A List of Low GI Foods to Eat

Low GI foods are the ones with a GI value less or equal to 50. Here are some examples of low-GI foods:

  • Green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, cabbage, and kale
  • Brown rice or quinoa
  • Legumes, such as lentils and chickpeas
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Fruits like berries, apples, oranges, and banana

If you want to know more about the glycemic index of certain foods, check out the GI database from the University of Sydney. It shows the glycemic load and index of most foods from different brands.

Conclusion

Note that a low glycemic diet is an excellent way to improve your overall skin health, but for it to be effective, it's important to couple it with other healthy diets. You also need to get enough sleep and follow an effective skincare routine if you want your skin to shine on and off the field!
