Best Beauty And Grooming Tips For Cheerleading Tryouts
As an aspiring pro cheerleader, one of the things you’ll be concerned about on the day of tryouts is your looks. You should know that your cheer look is going to be quite different from your usual, everyday grooming. We’re talking about your hair, makeup, and accessories - not your current fitness level (although this also plays a big role on your overall appearance).
I want you to stand out and give judges the impression that you’re a great fit for a pro cheerleading team. In this blog post, I’ve prepared for you a simple grooming guide to follow to ensure that your appearance aligns with that of every member of your dream team.
1. Hair
Nearly all your dance routines will involve a hair toss. Perhaps you’ll be doing four or more! Unlike scholastic cheerleaders, pro cheer teams dance with their hair completely down. This means that you need to have full, soft hair that spells g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s.
Choose a color that complements your skin tone and one that matches your team. A good advice would be to look at your team’s photocard. If you already pre-selected a color for yourself and don’t see it in the ads, most likely that color has not been approved.
When it comes to highlights, please remember not to pick high-contrast colors that will have you end up with “skunk” hair. As much as possible, grow healthy-looking, long hair - preferrably without bangs. You will also need regular trims to avoid having ends that are fried and dry.
2. Skin
Hormonal fluctuations are responsible for acne in a lot of women. It’s a huge struggle to keep your skin clear due to acne flare-ups on your face, chest and back. These zits and acne scars can be very visible during dance auditions.
You might want to visit a dermatologist who can help you deal with your skin concerns. You’ll be prescribed with oral or topical medications. However, if you’ve already consulted one and haven’t gotten real results, try adjusting your diet. Avoid food and drinks that trigger acne such as coffee, chocolate, cheese, spices, nuts, pancake, and bacon.
Here’s a quick fix I highly recommend for pimples that occasionally pop-up: Poke a tiny hole in a fresh lemon and squeeze out a few drops on your problem areas. This would help clear your skin with less serious acne.
If all else fails, your ultimate solution would be to conceal your pimples and scars with the right makeup. Consult an experienced makeup artist who can advise you products that can “hide” bumps and spots according to your skin type.
3. Makeup
Ask yourself this question: “Which makeup currently used by members of my dream team would look great on me?” The looks of those pro cheerleaders from your team should be your basis for choosing your makeup. Make sure that the makeup you go for matches your facial features.
In terms of beauty brands, you’ll want to choose products from M.A.C Cosmetics. This brand is well-known in the entertainment industry.
Here are some general tips to follow:
- Eyeliner - Use eyeliner at all times during tryouts. Eyeliner prevents “sleepy eyes” especially when you’re feeling tired. It enhances your eyes, making you look more beautiful and charming.
- Sparkle - Add a bit of gold or silver glitter (or both) to the inner corner of each eye. Remember not to go overboard with sparkle - just have a touch of it to make you shine.
- Lipstick - Always choose red. Most teams require their dancers to wear red lip color for consistency and visibility. Russian Red by M.A.C Cosmetics perfectly matches with most skin tones. Another great lip color offered by M.A.C is Charmed I’m Sure (Marilyn Monroe Collection).
- Cheeks - Achieve a soft, rosy glow on each cheek. Your goal here is to get a natural look. I highly recommend a rose or peach tone. If you want to find out which tone really works for you, engage in any physical activity (such as running or jumping) that will leave you with flushed cheeks. Go for that color you see.
- Bronzer - While applying bronzer is optional, this will help you achieve a sexy, naturally tanned, and sun-kissed look. Bronzers are also known for hiding skin imperfections. When applying bronzer on your face, apply lightly on these areas - forehead, along your jawline, cheekbones, and sides of your nosebridge. These are the areas commonly exposed to the sun.
