Do You Have a Plan of Attack for Your Next Pro Cheer Audition?
I have served as an NFL professional cheerleader for two years and spent many years directing professional cheerleading teams in the US and abroad. As someone who has a vast experience in the industry, I can tell whether a candidate is fully prepared or not.
This compels me to tackle the subject on having a solid plan for a future audition. So let me ask you: Have you started creating a to-do checklist? Or a more serious question: Are you taking action already? If you need my advice because you don’t know how to get started, this article is for you.
Think about what you need to work on.
This should be your first step. On a blank piece of paper, write down the top areas about yourself that need to be improved. Is it your diet? Physique? Dance ability? Flexibility? Speaking skills?
If you auditioned for a professional or semi-professional cheer team in the past, you probably already have a list of ideas on areas for improvement based on the judges’ feedback. Please take it seriously. Unless you work on these areas regularly, you won’t be able to show up at your next audition BETTER. Your goal should be to make progress!
Do something each day!
One of your biggest mistakes is spending the majority of your time reading and studying what you need to do and rarely taking action. True learning happens when you act based on your learning and refining your behavior in the process. As soon as you read a tip, for example, a stretching exercise for body flexibility, try it right away.
I also know that many aspiring cheerleaders are busy with work, family, and social obligations. There will be days when you miss a dance practice or gym workout. Don’t let these days discourage you. One way to keep pushing towards your ultimate goal (regardless of your schedule) is to DO ONE LITTLE THING EACH DAY. 1 small action is better than no action at all!
Change your mindset.
Anxiety, the fear of failure, doubts about your abilities. Do these negative thoughts dictate the quality of your audition preparation? I understand that past experiences and comments by others can affect your attitude in life.
But today, I want to help you change your mindset for the best. Be intentional about the thoughts you welcome. You only need to welcome wholesome and encouraging thoughts that give rise of positive actions.
What are examples of these thoughts?
“I may still have a long way to go to improve myself for the auditions, but right now I am SURELY making progress.”
“Even if I did not make the team last year, the great thing about it is that I have LEARNED A LOT from the experience.”
“All the resources that I need to succeed are right in front of me.”
“Tomorrow is another CHANCE to TRY AGAIN!”
Don’t limit yourself to one team.
If you want to increase your chances of becoming part of a dance team, don’t focus on one team. An NFL team may have rejected you, but that doesn’t mean that you are not fit for the rest of the NFL, NBA, or semi-pro teams!
Right now, I want you to research various prospective teams and note down their audition dates. If the audition schedules do not overlap and it’s convenient for you to travel to multiple locations to audition, then why not? Open yourself to what’s out there - be open-minded!
There you have it - tips that will help you plan your next audition. I hope to hear about your success soon! Please feel free to join my private Facebook group and be part of a supportive pro cheer community!
