How To Find Time For Exercise As A Busy Parent (And Aspiring Pro Cheerleader)

If you're a busy parent who plans to audition for a pro cheerleading team, finding the opportunity to workout can be tough. It's even tougher if you got an active kid. The question is, how can you exercise when you have a ton of responsibilities as a mom? Here are five simple and practical ideas to get you started:

1. Workout while your child is busy playing.

Give your child something fun to do with toys or simple objects at home such as completing a puzzle, building a mini house, or placing balls in a bucket. That way, you can do a calisthenic workout from your exercise mat while watching him.

2. Combine playtime and exercise.

Swimming, dancing, riding a bike, kicking a soccer ball, and jogging are some activities you can do with your kid that count as exercise. Instead of just watching him play, joining the fun will help you sneak more movement into your day and at the same time strengthen your parent-child relationship.

3. Adopt the 10-10-10 exercise plan.

This technique is applicable to moms who work from home. Instead of committing to working out each day for 30 minutes straight, do three 10-minute exercise bursts. Choose the best times of the day where you're not actively looking after your kid. Do this while he's taking a nap, having quiet time, or attending school.

4. Turn any chore into a workout.

Why not burn extra calories during your everyday chores? For example, while scrubbing or sweeping the floor, take 2-3 minutes to plank. While you're making the bed, pause for 5 minutes to do some jumping jacks. While cleaning the windows, do wall push-ups.

5. Team up with a mom.

Do you have a friend, co-worker, family member, or neighbor whom you trust who also has kids? You can invite each other for a workout after dropping the kids at school. Another idea is to do a babysitting swap. That way, you can help each other focus on your workouts while saving on babysitting.
