Finding It Difficult to Stay Positive Before a Pro Cheer Audition? Use These Tips
Since the moment you sent your application to your dream pro cheer team, you’ve felt a rollercoaster of emotions. Excitement, pressure, and frustrations are one of them.
And sometimes you commit mistakes during your audition prep that spark discouragement and negativity. What’s worse, you don’t even know what made you lose the drive to continue your audition preparation in the first place.
But finding the reason behind that negativity isn’t what we’re going to discuss in this article. Instead, we’re going to teach you how not to lose your fighting spirit as the audition day approaches!
1. Observe your emotions and calm yourself
You shouldn’t give in to the feeling of discouragement every time something doesn’t go your way. Remember the last time you punished yourself for failing? It only made your feelings worse, right? Feel what you feel and grit your teeth if you have to. But after that, take a deep breath. Move on from it and do better.
2. Trust yourself and the process
Once you make an audition goal, you have to trust yourself and be confident that your plan will work. You have to tell yourself daily, “This plan will work. I know myself. If I stick to the plan, it will work for me because I’m doing it right. I’m sure about it!”
3. Coach yourself in a kind way
Reconfigure the settings of your inner voice to be much more kind and child-friendly. It’s a lie to say that no one has ever cursed themselves. But in order to remove negativity and stay positive for the pro cheer auditions, your inner voice must be cheerful yet forgiving like a pro cheerleader, not a stress-inducing army drill sergeant.
4. Adopt a mindset that replaces failure with learning experience
A good mindset doesn’t think that failure exists. Instead, it thinks that all setbacks are just lessons or pit stops to take before fully reaching a goal. This is a mindset you should adopt. Don’t stress over missing a workout session. Instead, assess why it happened, and do some planning to avoid it from happening again.
5. Visualize your setbacks as a distant object
Now that you’re done with assessing an audition mistake, it’s time to bury it for good. Or think of that failure as a road sign that you didn’t notice fully as you speed away from it. If your involuntary memory resurfaces to mess with your day, reply by saying, “What’s that? Nope. Don’t remember. Doesn’t exist. Happy thoughts… Happy thoughts.”
6. Stick to your plan and character
The pressure of being the candidate that the judges will surely look for is stressful and discouraging. If adjusting your character just to pass the preliminary auditions is hard for you, then don’t force yourself. Be yourself from prep days until past the actual audition day.
7. Ditch the thought of passing the audition perfectly
The entire audition process has many stages and it can feel like a very intricate job application. If you make it your life’s mission to pass the auditions at a 100% success rate, then you’re volunteering to get an anxiety disorder before and after it.
Your trust in your plan is important but you must consider that anything can happen out of your control. Because when you do, you’ll be relaxed during the audition prep while taking rejection like a sport and you’ll treat the experience as a valuable lesson.
8. Have fun with the process
Too much focus on the audition preparation is like a speeding motorcycle, all it takes is a rock on the road to make it crash badly. That’s what would happen to you if you focus too much on the auditions and your preparation. One tiny mistake will discourage you from quitting.
Relax and have fun while the audition day slowly approaches. Just stick to your goals and you’ll be fine. Don’t stress yourself out. Tend to other hobbies if you have some.
Negative emotions stem from overthinking. Once you don’t allow yourself to move on from an issue or mistake, you’ll shut out the positivity in your life. This goes the same when you focus on the wrong things or you’re using your focus the wrong way.
