Having been at professional cheerleading auditions, either working behind the scenes or as one of the judges, I've witnessed a lot of potential candidates who weren't able to make it to their dream squad just because they weren't prepared.
You can be physically appealing, a great dancer and a team player but without adequate preparation you're doomed to fail. Although judges can see potential in a lot of candidates, they would always go for the ones who are well-prepared.
If you're ready to realize your potential today, you've come to the right place. I've prepared for you helpful tips to ace the upcoming pro cheerleading tryouts.
Ready? Let's get started.
Build your stamina and physique.
Whether you want to be an NFL or NBA cheerleader, you need to have that high energy to prove to the judges that you have the power to tackle multiple performances. Also, squads will require you to wear a two-piece. A lean and toned look is a sign of hardwork and dedication.
You can hire a personal fitness trainer who can develop a safe and proper workout regimen for you. Getting the right training from a professional helps you stick to your health and fitness routine and achieve timely results.
However, if you don't have the budget to pay for a personal trainer, you can join a more affordable fitness class or engage in daily cardio exercises like running and biking. To build your flexibility, try yoga. Remember to always stretch before exercising!
Study your squad's dance style.
It's important that you study the pro cheerleading team you're auditioning for. You should be able to prove to the judges that you're a good fit for the squad. Start with watching YouTube videos of your team's dance routines. Try some kickline moves and formation changes. Pay attention to the type of music they're dancing to.

Prior to the auditions, your cheer team may offer prep classes. These optional classes are designed to prepare you by teaching you a lot of dance choreography - most likely similar to what you'll be dancing during the auditions. These classes are on a first-come, first serve basis. If you choose to join these classes, pre-register early.
Choose the right makeup and hairstyle.
Your goal is to blend in with your team's look and stand out at the same time. When it comes to makeup, avoid choosing colors that make you look like a clown. It would help to check your team's current photocard so you can be guided.
Some pro cheerleaders dilvulge their hair and makeup secrets. You can check them out for yourself. There are squads that stick to an "official" lip color (with MAC being the brand of choice) while others prefer any lip color for as long as it goes well with their skin tone and uniform.
In general, pro cheerleaders are required to wear their hair down. If you want to add volume to your hair, go for waves than defined curls. Using a hairspray would help keep your hair out of your face while doing dance routines. Be really careful with dyeing your hair and adding highlights. Pick natural colors that complement your skin.
Plan your attire ahead of time.
Check your squad's auditions attire requirements. Your team may make an attire mandatory to make the judging process fair to all contestants. The typical attire is body hugging so expect your team to make you wear any of the following - a leotard, two-piece, hosiery/tights, briefs, and crop top.
Show confidence.
Self-confidence is a must if you want to be part of a pro cheerleading squad. You'll be asked to answer open-ended questions about yourself and your sports team and perform dance routines in front of a huge crowd - including news media personnel.
If you don't trust in your abilities, it will show. Having confidence in yourself will help you overcome your inner fears and focus on what you can do to successfully make it into your dream squad.
Change your negative thoughts starting today. It's important that you set small, achievable goals for yourself - in terms of health, fitness, mindset, and anything relevant to passing the tryouts. Take time to review your application and try answering possible questions. On your big day, smile! Show you're ready to face the world! ;)
