How to Cultivate a Growth Mindset for Athletes

Professional cheerleaders work hard to learn and acquire different skills to reach their full potential. Everything starts with the right mindset.

A growth mindset means believing that you can get smarter and better over time. With a growth mindset, you’re open to developing new skills and you strive for new things. This is vital for athletes and aspiring pro cheerleaders to succeed in their respective fields.

Consider your mindset at the present moment. Do you assume that skills are based on inherent nature alone or that your abilities are fixed traits? If you’ve answered yes, then you may have a fixed mindset.

Unfortunately, people with fixed mindsets tend to give up easily when faced with challenging tasks or techniques. But this doesn’t have to be the case. The good news is that you can always change your mindset. Here are five tips for athletes like yourself!

1. Set realistic goals

Setting realistic goals allows for personal improvement, which ultimately affects your success. You may already have a set of skills, but don't just stop there. Instead, think of things that will sharpen them Moreover, write down the critical abilities that you need to know to increase your chances of winning. Then, create a roadmap on how you can achieve those goals.

2. Don't be afraid to learn new things.

People with a fixed mindset tend to avoid learning opportunities because they think it's out of their inherent qualities. But remember that children didn't just randomly walk upright. They started by crawling, then tumbled a few times before finally walking. The same goes for athletes. You start by learning something you don't know. It may take a few mistakes, but it's okay. It's perfectly normal to make mistakes before mastering new skills.

3. Track your progress

Assess your skills occasionally to know if your methods have worked. Please don't be embarrassed to measure your progress; it doesn't define you or your talent. Instead, think of it as an action to achieve your goals and a motivation to do better next time. Track your progress by keeping a journal or a workout log, or take photos and compare them to when you first got started!

4. Guided self-reflection

Having a fixed mindset is also something that one person can learn. They may have been watching the wrong videos, or they may be influenced by their previous coach. But like other behaviors, you can unlearn having a fixed mindset. Take your time to reflect. Challenge your initial beliefs and reframe your view of losing and winning.

5. Seek constructive feedback

Accepting feedback from others is a great way to develop a growth mindset. They may tell you the skills that you've achieved or abilities that still need improvement. If it's hard to accept criticisms, start by seeking feedback from your loved ones. Remember that you can't improve if you don't know which part needs improvement.
