How to Find the Right Dance Studio for You
Professional cheerleading is not too different from dance. Notice your favorite teams in the NBA and NFL, and you'll see a lot of dance in their routines - Jazz, Hip-Hop, and even Ballet.
Even as you prepare to audition, you will have to study a dance routine and be ready with your freestyle dance.
Enrolling in dance workshops and classes are viewed as dedication. So now the question you ask, which dance studio is right for professional cheerleaders? Read on.
1. Choose focus over variety.
Are you planning to enroll in two or three dance classes or do you want to focus on one? Your answer should help you find your top local dance studios.
Check out their website and Facebook page for reviews. See what people say about their dance studio on social media. Look them up on YouTube for a feel of their classes, personality, and philosophy.
Go for a dance studio with a good reputation in the dance style you wish to improve. If you choose a dance studio that offers different classes, they should have instructors who are reputable at the dance style, not just knowledgeable.
2. Learn about the instructor’s credentials.
You want someone who has extensive training on the dance style you want to master. You want to learn from the pros. Consider dance consultants with a background in cheerleading in the NFL or NBA.
Also, you need someone with first-rated teaching skills and are also good choreographers.
3. Find your reason for investing, and then budget.
Torn between two dance studios with great teachers and a reputation for your chosen dance? Consider their fees and your reason for investing.
For professional cheerleaders, a dance class is more than a hobby. Dance can give you the foundation you need to learn routines faster and gain confidence in your abilities.
Many cheerleaders audition with a background in dance. They have an advantage when it comes to flexibility, coordination, skill, technique, and rhythm.
Knowing your WHY will help you decide how much you are willing to invest in a dance studio. Still, you have to calculate the monthly or annual fees you're expected to pay out of your pro cheerleader salary.
4. Have a feel of the environment.
Sign up for a trial class so you get a feel of the teaching style of the instructor as well as the look and feel of the studio. Do they have wood-sprung or floating floors? This type of flooring absorbs shock and minimizes stress on your bones and joints. Don't forget to check the bathroom as well.
A trial class also gives you the opportunity to talk to other students.
What can they say about the classes? Do they feel they are getting their money's worth? Did they get what they expected? Are they made to feel pressure in class?
Even if you liked what you read about the dance studio and found it to be too good to be true in reality, then opt-out of it.
5. Learn about their services.
If you don't have a lot of dance background, consider taking classes in ballet, jazz, or hip-hop. You can pick up dance choreography there you can use for your freestyle performance.
Barre workouts and pilates can also help you gain more flexibility to avoid injuries from quick and intense dance routines.
Consider enrolling for a hairography workshop as well so you'll learn how to work your hair to your advantage.
Parting Words
Pro cheerleading is not just about the pom-pom motions, jumps, and cheers. It incorporates a lot of dance, too. Whether you want to improve your flexibility or sharpness in getting routines perfectly, a dance class would serve you well. Do your initial research online, sign up for a trial class, and invest in a dance studio you know you will love and enjoy!!!
