How to Keep Your Dance Motivation High

Learning to dance isn’t easy. You get frustrated because you just can’t seem to perform a simple move right. Sometimes you fall to the floor. On other unfortunate occasions, you get injured. These are truly some demotivating experiences and only the hardy people get to be good at it.

But that’s the beauty of dancing. It’s one of the art forms that everyone can master out of hard work. In the world of pro cheerleading, even the ones born with two left feet can perform on levels close to Dallas Cowboys or Miami HEAT Cheerleaders. All you need is ambition and perseverance with a high degree of motivation.

1. Challenge yourself with complex dance moves and styles

Sticking to one dance style and routine can be boring especially once you’ve reached the expert level. Avoid this by exploring other moves and styles. If your style is mainly hip-hop, learn the tango or tap dancing. Better yet, mix two or three dancing styles into one unique routine.

2. Talk to other dancers

Ask other dancers about their experiences in dancing. You can discover secrets from them for staying motivated or some useful dancing strategies that would work for you.

3. Get a retail therapy

If the skies are gray then put color into it by shopping. Demotivation is sometimes caused by a dull wardrobe or lack of attire to wear for practice. Depending on your budget, you can go to a thrift store to make your own style or buy new athleisure-inspired apparel.

4. Relax from time to time

Listen to your body. If it says it’s tired and wants a break, then relax from dancing for a while and recover. Go on a short vacation from dancing practices or take a day off. But don’t take too much day off especially if the audition or live performance day is near.

5. Create a dancer’s vision board

Who’s your favorite dancer or dancing idol? Cut out a picture of them and paste it to your vision board. Put your favorite motivational quote there as well. It doesn’t only have to be your favorite dancer. You can use a picture of your favorite and dream pro cheer team or your current squad.

6. Appreciate the small wins

This is an important thing to learn for those who just got into dancing. Getting good at this performing art doesn’t happen overnight. There are times where a learning dancer will find a sequence hard to execute. But it doesn’t matter because just showing up for practice and learning a short dancing sequence is already a win.

7. Be inspired by other dancers

Remember your favorite dancer I told you to cut a picture of? Go and watch a video of them dancing. It’s clear that you were inspired by their talent so get reinspired. If you don’t have a favorite dancer, then watch a video of a known artist about the dance style you’re currently learning.

8. Track your progress

In addition to appreciating your small wins, it’s also good to track your progress. You can do this by recording yourself as you dance. Record all your dance practice sessions. Watch how much you’ve progressed from day one by comparing all your dancing videos. Seeing how far you’ve come is a great motivator.

9. Welcome failure

Failures are lessons. Just because you fell and got a small injury doesn’t mean you’re not cut out to dance. It just means you need more control over your movements, awareness of proper form, and caution. Treat mistakes the same way as difficulties. Keep on challenging yourself.

Strive to maintain a positive mind. Don’t let the feeling of demotivation paralyze you. When you feel a bit lazy or low, find something immediately that would brighten up your spirit and energize your body.
