How to Nail Your Next Pro Cheer Audition Interview
Will you be participating in this year's dance/pro cheer auditions? Because your preparation goes beyond dancing and keeping yourself fit.
You also need to prepare for the interview portion. Interviews usually take place after you make the first round (preliminaries). A panel of judges will evaluate your personality, interests, and knowledge of the sports and team. Most of all, your ability to communicate clearly and intelligently.
Do you feel panicky now? Don't be. There are tried and true strategies that increase your chances of making a great first impression. And that's what I'm going to share with you in this article. Keep reading.
1. Participate in a local Toastmasters group.
Nothing will boost your public speaking skills more than practicing in a safe and supportive environment. A local Toastmasters club is there to help you combat fear and anxiety so that you can speak with confidence. It will also increase your ability to think on your feet! (Because during the interviews, you might be thrown a question that you didn't prepare for.)
2. Do not fidget.
Fidgeting is a sign that you're nervous. Remember: Your body language can affect how a judge views you. Even if you feel nervous inside, you don't have to other people know! Here's what you can do: Use hand gestures occasionally to convey your message or keep them clasped together to avoid subconscious movements.
3. Make a list of questions that may come up.
You need to practice answering actual pro cheer interview questions. Earlier, I mentioned that you will answer questions that reveal not just your personality and interests, but also your knowledge of the sports and team! Make sure to brush up your knowledge on sports rules. Go to the league's website to study the league as a whole. Be familiar with the staff on your team as well.
In my book, Professional Cheerleading Audition Secrets: How To Become an Arena Cheerleader for NFL®, NBA®, and Other Pro Cheer Teams, I include a section where I list sample audition interview questions and how you should answer each question!
4. Share your accomplishments.
A judge might ask you a question that will reveal your accomplishments. Don't be shy about them! Share examples of your accomplishments that are directly related to dancing/professional cheerleading. Show that you are passionate about your dream. This communicates that you are willing to go the extra mile to succeed.
5. Show a light and relaxed smile.
Have you ever sat through a meeting where everyone was straight-faced? It creates tension in the atmosphere. A healthy smile will not only convey positivity and a sense of calm, but it smiling will also help you feel more confident inside! Just remember to keep it real. Show a natural grin. Use your smile as an accent - not something that's permanently plastered on your face. Pick the most appropriate times to smile!
These tips should help you work on your interview techniques. Think of an audition interview as a job interview. Be knowledgeable, professional, positive, and confident. Prepare ahead of time. Even if you join a local public speaking club, rehearse at home alone or with a friend!
