How to Reprogram Your Mind for Dance Audition Success

Let me ask you a question: At this point, are you 100% confident about your choreography, fitness level, and interview skills? If not, you need to start training your mind for success. Whatever you need to improve for the pro cheer/dance auditions, can be improved through the right mindset. There’s an immense potential within you that’s waiting to be unlocked. Follow the tips below.

1. Visualize what you want.

In my book, Professional Cheerleading Audition Secrets: How To Become an Arena Cheerleader for NFL®, NBA®, and Other Pro Cheer Teams, I emphasize how visualization can be a powerful tool to getting to where you want. How can you achieve something if you don’t know what that is and the steps required? Your vision must be specific and clear.  

2. Write a list of positive affirmations.

More often than not, an aspiring pro cheer candidate becomes a victim of toxic self-criticism. Being overly critical of oneself usually happens when you compare yourself to other women. It can also result from unrealistic expectations you set. Be your biggest cheerleader! Write down a series of I AM…

  • I am getting better at hip-hop.
  • I am surrounded by the best mentors and supportive people.
  • I am the best version of myself.
  • I am smart and talented.
  • I am worthy to be part of the [NFL/NBA dance team name].

Read these wonderful affirmations before you go to bed and upon waking up.

3. Commit to your decision to succeed.

How many times have you promised yourself to act on your goals but failed to do so? Here’s an extremely effective strategy to get rid of procrastination and inaction…. Leave room for only 1 option. That way, you have no other choice but the one you commit to! 

For example, imagine this situation: You know that a loved one of yours would die the next day. Would you go to the office or would you spend the remaining time with him/her?

4. Know where to put your focus on.

When you’re preparing for future auditions, you need to do it SMART. Make the most of your prep time by focusing on the right things. What are the judges of your dream team looking for? Do they want a candidate with an experience in jazz and hip-hop? What audition outfit do they expect you to wear? This part requires a lot of research.

5. Clear your conscious mind.

Overwhelming thoughts prevent you from acting on your goals. Information overload can lead to the wrong decisions. On top of your pro cheer audition prep, you attend to other matters in your life - schooling, kids, work, etc. Empty your mind of these thoughts. Exercise is a powerful method. Another is meditation.

Final Thoughts

You are in charge of your success, always bear that in mind. If you are struggling with negativity, it’s not too late to change your thought patterns.
