How to Stop Feeling Intimidated by Others During Pro Cheer Auditions

Do you feel intimidated by others? On the big day, it’s easy to feel bothered by other candidates no matter how well you prepared. Candidates who dance beautifully, come in great outfits, and returning veterans make you feel inadequate. I might not be interesting enough to the judges. Oh, she really dances better than I do. I won’t make the team for sure.

Stop believing in these negative thoughts. Ladies, we are all beautiful and talented in our unique way. I want you to believe that you have something unique to bring to the table on the big day because that’s the truth. Here are 5 things to keep in mind when you start feeling intimidated during auditions.

1. You are not alone.

If you’re intimidated, so are they. In fact, other candidates may also be intimidated by you. Have you ever thought of that? We are human and we have our own fears and insecurities to deal with. Being aware of the truth that everyone has challenges will help you be able to cope better.

2. Learn from them.

Instead of allowing their strengths to make you feel less, appreciate and learn from them! In my book, “Professional Cheerleading Audition Secrets: How To Become an Arena Cheerleader for NFL®, NBA®, and Other Pro Cheer Teams” I advise candidates to observe how veterans dance, interact, and carry themselves and actually emulate them. Succeed by learning from others!

3. Embrace your worth.

If you are reading this now, I want you to know that you are worthy. Don’t be hard on yourself. Stop defining yourself based on what others can do and what you cannot. To be the best version of yourself, accept who you are fully. Thank yourself that you’ve shown up at the auditions. Remember all your efforts and achievements that have carried you to this special moment in your life.

4. Cut out distractions.

Identify what distracts you and direct your brain to focus on what’s important. Stop looking at the candidate who intimidates you! Replace those negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Ask yourself, “What can I do at this moment that will bring me closer to making the team?” Correct your posture. Mentally rehearse your solo routine. Practice answering interview questions.

5. Challenge your beliefs.

Filtering is an important strategy as it helps you be extra picky with what you accept as truths. Most thoughts that randomly cross your mind result from your past experiences and a lot of them are limiting beliefs. Ask yourself if these beliefs are actually true. Test their validity. And if they don’t serve a good purpose at all, reframe them. Practice self-compassion.
