Improving Your Dancing At Home: 9 Simple Daily Practices

High bodily-kinesthetic intelligence is the ability to use one's body with great precision. And it isn’t something that everyone is born with. Yet, it is a prominent characteristic among professional dancers and world-class athletes like Florence Griffith Joyner - the fastest woman of all time.

While it may be an innate talent that allows one to perform such feats, aspiring pro cheerleaders like you can also raise your kinesthetic skill level. Through constant practice, training, and following the tips below, you’ll rock the virtual auditions with your well-honed dancing.

1. Set dance goals

A good example of a goal is to dance to a whole song without total exhaustion and with 100% movement accuracy. This way you can improve your dancing skills and cardio endurance that are needed for the audition day and your workouts. You’ll also develop commitment and discipline which are necessary as a pro cheerleader.

2. Schedule your practices at peak energy times

Don’t practice at the time of the day when you feel tired or should be resting. Identify which hours you feel more focused and active. You’ll learn dance moves easier and improve better by doing them this way.

3. Repeat learned movements for polishing

After learning a dance move, practice mimicking the individual moves perfectly. Record yourself in a video as you practice. Then, compare your execution to the model on the video. Keep repeating the movement until you find a close resemblance. Then move on to the next move.

When you’ve polished every dance step, remember to always properly execute every move you’ve learned so that you’ll be able to dance the whole showcase perfectly.

4. Understand the body’s anatomy, senses, and motion physics

Dancing styles have a variety of signature moves. Some have spins, others have kicks, and there are also dance routines with jumps. That’s why when dancing, you should understand how your body works to avoid injuries by falling or tripping over.

Every force you exert and every body part must be properly controlled to make your moving appear perfect. Your senses must be fine-tuned to know and calculate when to start and stop moving for syncing with the music.

Physics also plays a huge part in dancing. An example would be using the law of angular momentum where you control your turn speed with your arms.

5. Incorporate normal breathing and muscle control while dancing

In dancing, cardio-endurance plays a major role. As the dance progresses you become more exhausted by the second. This will make your movement sluggish and throw your sync to the music off. To avoid this, you must practice breathing normally as you dance. Straining your muscles at the right moments must be observed as well.

6. Practice dancing with full confidence in front of anyone

Practicing your dance moves at home alone all the time is good, but the drawback to this is you’ll find it difficult to perform in front of strangers because you’re not used to it. As much as possible, find an audience to perform for. You can ask a relative, friend, or coworker to watch you dance personally or virtually. It’s also advisable that you ask them to provide feedback.

7. Exercise

Working out isn’t only for improving your cardio-endurance. It can also make your body flexible for more complex dance moves. Be sure to choose the right exercise to target a specific dancing issue you face. For example, if you’re not good at performing jumps, squats and lunges will help you improve your landing balance and jump strength.

8. Dance in front of a mirror

The best way to polish a dance is to do it in front of the mirror. However, you must memorize how the instructor or the model moves so you can perfectly follow their lessons. Before dancing in front of a mirror, make sure you’re far from it enough to see yourself while avoiding hitting it as you dance.

9. Groove anytime

Improving your dance moves shouldn’t be limited to a scheduled practice. Listening to music and dancing to it while doing chores or walking around your home can help your body get accustomed to moving rhythmically. So put your earphones on and dance to the music while you cook, vacuum, or water the plants.

Mastering your dancing is complex. You’ll never know how well you perform without the perspective of an audience. Not only that but you also need to exercise your body to meet the demand of such a high-energy-requiring skill. So eat well, get proper rest, and do a lot of practice.
