Pro Cheer Advice: Why Experience Is The Best Education
Don’t get me wrong. Gaining all the knowledge you can about succeeding in the auditions is a great move. But putting your knowledge into action? That’s way BETTER. In your pursuit for success, it’s easy to let overlearning keep you from doing the work.
Today’s blog post is about putting what you learn into action. Put simply, be able to experience it. Whether you’re still thinking of pursuing professional cheerleading or are in the process of preparing yourself, this is for you. Keep reading.
Why is experience the best teacher?
You know what experience does? It beats assumptions every single time.
Here’s a simple example: You think that a certain hair color looks good on you based on what you’ve read online. But unless you buy the dye and apply it on yourself, you’ll never really know!
Another example: They tell you that a certain diet is the best way for you to burn fat and build muscle. In fact, you’ve read a couple of studies that supported that diet. But when you tried it yourself, you wonder why it didn’t work the same way it did for your friends. That’s when you dug deeper and found out eventually that you have a certain condition that promoted your weight gain — thus you need another diet.
If you keep on filling your mind with lessons, you would easily forget everything you learn. Experience is the key to retaining those ideas. In fact, with experimentation, you can make them even better.
How to implement what you learn
By now, maybe you feel excited to start doing the work. But you don’t know where to begin. Here’s a piece of advice: Don’t overwhelm yourself by thinking that you have to tackle everything at once! In this section, I’m going to share 3 tips on making the “doing” process as efficient and stress-free as possible,
1. Write what you’ve learned.
Jot it down. I would recommend getting a journal that’s dedicated to your pro cheer journey. Whenever you listen to a random podcast episode or read something from a Pro Cheer Audition Prep ebook, be sure to write it. Most importantly, write only the things that are relevant to your journey. Doing this focuses your strategies so that you hit the right goals.
2. Do one thing at a time.
The best way to be productive in the preparation process is to focus on one task at a certain time. Picture this: You decide what you’re going to do for the next hour of your day and do that thing only. If you do that, you’ll realize how much you can accomplish. Spreading yourself too thin leads to mediocre results. That’s why focus matters.
3. Give yourself permission to be imperfect.
Yes!!! Allow yourself to make mistakes. Letting yourself make as many mistakes as possible during audition prep time will help you polish your technique. This way, you show up at an audition (whether in-person or virtual) confident about your performance. Keep in mind that mistakes are lessons in disguise.
I encourage you to step out of the “information-gathering” mode. What can you do today to get closer to your goals? What areas in your audition prep need implementation? Once you do the work, the next step is to be consistent. I’m looking forward to your audition success!
