Pro Cheer Interview Tips to Help You Make the Squad
Whether you’re a few days away from the interview portion or months ahead of the auditions, interviews can be extremely scary. Being interviewed by the judges is like applying for a new job. This means one thing: You should come 100% prepared.
The judges are not only looking for beauty and dance performance; they want to know how well you respond to questions and your knowledge of the team. If you think you need expert advice in this area, my tips will surely help.
1. Relax and carry yourself with confidence.
Even when you’re panicking inside, never ever show it. Breathe deeply and try to relax. Focus on the here and now. You’ve made it to the interviews and this is more than enough reason to be REALLY proud of yourself! Nervous habits to avoid include looking down, looking away, and slouching. Before you walk into the room, get in the right frame of mind.
2. Research the sports team you’re auditioning for.
One of the biggest mistakes you’ll make is not getting to know the sports team itself. Remember, you’re going to be a team ambassador. As a future representative, you are expected to be knowledgeable enough. Think of yourself as a sports fan. Basically, you’d want to research the people behind the team (coach, owner, etc.), team colors, rules of the game, and charities supported by the sports team.
3. Practice with a friend or family member.
Ask someone to hold a mock interview with you. This will mirror the actual audition interview experience. You’ll be surprised at how nervous you’ll feel at first. Grab this opportunity to really polish your answers, get rid of unnecessary mannerisms, and be more comfortable with being yourself!
4. Present yourself well.
Find out if there’s a dedicated day for the personal interview because if there is, usually you are to wear a business casual attire. Confirm this on the audition page of the team website and also pay attention to announcements. Show up neat and polished. You’ll want to wear lighter makeup shades because during interviews, you’ll be closer to the judges. Check out the 2018 Rams Cheerleaders Interview Process to get a feel of the process.
5. Show the best version of yourself.
When you’re in the room with other cheer candidates, the last thing you should do is to try to be like them. Every woman brings unique strengths to the table. Audition interviews are the perfect time to promote yourself. I would like for you to do some soul searching. Dig deeper to figure out what makes you shine as a potential dance team member. One of the seemingly easy (but actually crucial) questions you’ll be asked is this: “Tell me about yourself.”
Final Thoughts
I hope that these 5 tips will make a huge difference in your interview performance. Congratulate yourself for reaching the final round or at least being interested in joining the next pro cheer auditions. You will make it if you prepare and practice!
