Pro Cheer Prep Advice: How to Get Over the Fear of Judgment

One time, I received an email from an aspiring cheerleader. She asked me, “Flavia, how do I get over the fear of being judged by others especially from people I care about?”

I know that many women secretly want to join an NFL, NBA, or semi-pro dance team and are afraid of what others might think of them. Today’s blog post is going to show you five helpful ways to stop allowing the fear of judgment to impact your dream.

1. Stop judging yourself.

We are our worst critics. Do you agree? Oftentimes, we look at ourselves with shame instead of love. You might be thinking to yourself, “I don’t deserve to be a pro cheerleader because…” When you judge yourself, your actions reflect it. And guess what? That also influences how others perceive you. Try to understand where your self-judgment is coming from. Make peace with yourself.

2. Do what an aspiring pro cheerleader must do to succeed.

Ask yourself, “What would an aspiring pro cheerleader like myself do at this very moment?” You would realize that simply doing what’s right eliminates your fear of judgment. You’re confident that you’re on the right path. You gave your all in honing your dancing, public speaking, and fitness. You have all the reasons to be confident and no reason to be afraid.

3. Be around people who get you.

When you’re pursuing a passion, it’s important to surround yourself with like-minded people. These people can be fitness enthusiasts, aspiring cheerleaders you meet at prep classes or connect with online, or friends who are totally supportive. Put yourself in an engaging environment where you don’t have to explain yourself. Notice how happy and motivated you’ll feel.

4. Embrace your strengths!

Once you figure out and fully acknowledge what you’re great at, you’re less likely to be affected by others’ opinions. At the same time, learn to accept your weaknesses. Nobody is perfect. We all have our vulnerabilities and that’s okay. The most important thing is that you’re able to harness your abilities. Do that and YOU WILL SHINE ON YOUR BIG DAY.

5. Don’t assume that other people judge you.

Stop making assumptions about others. When you get remarks which are hurtful, don’t immediately attach any meaning to them. As Shakespeare said in Hamlet, “Why, then, ’tis none to you, for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. To me it is a prison.” Words are just words unless you create some meaning around them.

Conclusion

While the fear of being judged is normal, not overcoming it is holds you back from success. Success happens when you learn to stand up for yourself and face your fears. Today, I challenge you to do something that scares you but contributes to your growth as an aspiring pro cheerleader. You can do it.
