Tattoo Cover Up: How to Conceal Tattoos With the Right Makeup

Being a pro cheerleader means to always look at your absolute best. But the criteria in judging for that isn’t quite clear for most of the time. The standards vary from team to team. When talking about tattoos, the case is similar. The answer to this dilemma is to better to be safe than sorry. Just remember that team managers and judges look for candidates that foster a team-spirit, not a solo-standout. It isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker but, openly showing tattoos proves the latter.

Here are the step by step procedures with the best makeup products that are sure to cover your tattoo on all pro cheer activities - prep classes, auditions, public appearances, or live performances.

1. Clean the area where your tattoo is

Use a cotton pad with rubbing alcohol to remove oil and clean your skin appropriately. This will maximize the stick of the primer to your skin when you apply it. Also, remove other products like lotions before applying the primer. The idea is to make your skin a clean slate for the following makeup products.

2.   Apply MAC primer

Apply your MAC prep + primer on your tattoo and evenly spread it all over the surrounding area. Let it dry for a while before moving on to the next step. The primer will clog your pores preventing sweat in washing all your concealer makeup off.

3. Apply color corrector with Smashbox

After applying your primer, use a color correcting stick by Smashbox. Take note to use the Lavender Don’t Be Dull variety if your tattoo ink is dark pigmented. For red-colored ink pigments, use Orange Look Less Tired. Draw the color correcting stick on the tattoo area until your tattoo’s color is masked.

4. Apply first base Fenty Beauty Foundation

It is important in this step that you choose a foundation that is two-tones darker than your skin tone. The foundation will fully cover the color corrector and tattoo while giving a seamless finish. It will also help in mixing the concealer without showing creases as you move.

5. Apply Laura Mercier concealer

Choose a shade that is darker yet close to your skin tone. Dab the concealer on your tattoo area until the color of the first base foundation is gone. It is important that you lightly dab the concealer to avoid messing the color corrector and the first base foundation.

6. Apply final base Fenty Beauty Foundation

In this step of concealing your tattoo, choose a foundation that is your skin’s tone. This will fully cover all your prior makeup while appearing natural. Nobody will notice that you’re covering a tattoo now. Back up, face the mirror from afar, and try to review your work with an overall perspective. If you’re in need of more coverage, add more foundation necessary until you’re satisfied with the look.

7. Sprinkle Laura Mercier loose powder

Finally, to prevent your tattoo concealing makeup from sticking to clothing when you dance, sprinkle the loose powder on your skin. Rub lightly until the surface area is dry. If your tattoo is on your face, you can use a face setting powder. Your tattoo concealer now is water and sweat-proof! But, I won’t suggest splashing it with water for testing. Like the final base foundation, match the loose powder’s color with your skin tone.

If your tattoo will be covered with clothing during prep classes, auditions, and live performances, it is okay not to apply concealer makeup. However, it is also okay to be safe by applying cover if you want to hide your tattoos from other cheerleaders. Lastly, if you consider getting a tattoo, have it inked on an area that can be covered by clothing.
