What Are the Judges Looking for at Pro Cheer Auditions?

If you’ve started preparing for next year’s auditions, congratulations! Preparation should begin earlier because it helps you address your weak points - for example, your flexibility needs more work. But to make the most out of the experience of getting ready, you want to know what the judges are looking for. Knowing what is expected of you is the way to succeed.

They Are Looking for the Complete Package.

So there you have it… Pro cheerleading teams, whether in the NFL, NBA, NHL, expect you have all the qualities of that best represent them. This means that even though you are still auditioning, they should be able to see you as a “potential team member.”

Here are the aspects of yourself to work on…

Knowledge

First of all, it’s very important that you know the background of the team you’ll be auditioning for. Through research, find out what it takes to become a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader or a Utah Jazz Dancer. In general, you should be knowledgeable of the following:

  • Sports rules knowledge
  • The team’s performance during the previous year
  • The organization’s staff and rosters
  • The team’s dance technique
  • Their current look (how they dress, apply makeup, etc.)

You will need the first three points for the interview (question and answer) round. Imagine yourself as a typical sports fan and research all the common things that a sports fan knows. If you have a friend or family member who happens to be one, ask away. But don’t just ask; visit the team website. Most of the details you need are there.

Dance Experience

Having a background in dance doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be a ballerina or have been into dancing since you were a kid. Dance experience can be acquired through training. And you need to start now. Remember that you will be dancing alongside professionally skilled dancers.

Take dance lessons at the nearest studio. Professional teams usually look for experience in Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Ballet. Sign-up for these classes and practice, practice, practice! If the team uses pom-poms, practice dancing in pom-poms so that you’ll get used to them.

Appearance

Now it’s time to get the look. Again, at the auditions, judges should be able to see you as a potential team member. This means that your makeup, hair, and outfit should reflect that of the look of a team member. The goal is to blend in but stand out. You should look like a squad member but at the same time, be noticed for your unique self.

Note the current look of the squad. What are their lipstick shades? Hair colors? Do they wear their hair curly or straight? You will need the advice of a professional hair stylist or makeup artist to see which styles and colors suit you best.
