What to Do When You Don’t Know Where to Start
When we want to become better, so often we confuse ourselves with choices. Should I join a ballet class to develop flexibility? How about yoga? Are meditation apps better than self-help books?
Whether you want to improve because you want to ace cheer tryouts or just enhance yourself as a veteran cheerleader, too many choices prevent action. It’s always the first step that’s the hardest to take - because we want to figure everything out.
But the truth is, we can only see as far as our headlights. In order to proceed to step 3, you need to take step 2. To take the second step, you need the first. If you have no idea how to start, my tips below help you.
There are many truths to a situation. Embrace one truth.
Believe me, all the strategies you think of that help you lose weight are factual. Adopting a paleo diet - yup, that works. Joining a crossfit gym - that’s super effective. Intermittent fasting - it’s worth a try! You see… YOU ALREADY KNOW A LOT OF TRUTHS. You are full of knowledge. You have all the tools to take action today.
Now here’s what you need to do: Choose one truth. It’s the truth that moves you forward right at this very moment. For example, if you have to stay indoors because it’s raining, pick a realistic alternative. It could be following a workout video or doing a household chore.
Decide ahead of time.
You may not be fond of to-do lists but they sure help in keeping you on track. And the best part of it is that it eliminates overthinking. It’s easy to drift off when you don’t have a solid plan.
I suggest you create a one-month workout or diet plan. Some would make it a 30-day challenge. Get some inspiration from existing fitness plans on Google. Tweak it based on your schedule and what works for you. Apps also eliminate the ambiguity of decision making.
Boost your motivation.
Becoming your best self is not always hard. It’s WANTING TO BECOME YOUR BEST that’s tough! Motivation is like a muscle. If you want to be able to easily motivate yourself each day to move in the direction of your goals, you need to practice it.
Mastering motivation often means pushing past your limits. It’s about building resilience and discipline no matter what. It can also mean reminding yourself each day of your “why.” You will reach a point when effort becomes effortless. Hard becomes easy. When you develop a mindset of action, getting started will no longer be a chore.
Stop obsessing over your mistakes.
Remorse… Regret… These are things that prevent you from moving forward. Instead of starting again, you look back and analyze what went wrong. There’s nothing much you can do to change a past situation. Thinking about something too much puts you in a negative spiral. You tend to repeat the same old mistakes.
Focus all your physical, mental, and emotional resources in the present moment. You’ll be amazed by your renewed sense of energy and passion. Make today the best day possible.
I hope you that today you’ll choose to start. I love tip #1 - embrace one truth. How about you?
