What To Expect During Pro Cheerleading Auditions

As auditions are fast approaching, I’m sure every aspiring pro cheerleader feels excited to make it to her dream cheer team. And with that, she has to be physically, mentally, and emotionally ready to stand out and prove to the judges that she deserves to represent a great squad.
There’s a lot of intense emotions during the tryouts. You’ll be going through a series of rounds where you’ll be asked to introduce yourself, dance, learn choreography, and answer personal and sports related questions.
While every pro cheer team has its own audition process which changes every year, it’s good to know some typical things to expect so you can be well-prepared on the big day!
Prep Classes (Pre-Audition)
Every pro cheer squad offers aspiring contestants the opportunity to participate in their prep classes (paid per session) which are optional but encouraged.
Done before the auditions, in these workshops you will be taught dance moves and techniques for you to be more confident onstage. You’ll also be provided with some makeup, photo, diet, and costume tips. You can join as many classes as you see fit.
One of the best things about joining a prep class of the squad you're auditioning for is that you get the chance to meet important people in your squad like the director, coach, and veteran candidates.
When joining these pre-audition classes, remember to relax and learn as much as you can. Make the of most out these workshops that are designed to help you succeed during the actual auditions. Since class space can be limited, register early.
Audition Duration Time
Expect that an audition can last from early morning through the evening. Some squads run their auditions up to 10:00 pm - rain or shine! Make sure to check your team’s schedule. Regardless of duration of the tryouts, always be ready to stay all day.
Because auditions last for hours, make sure you have a list of things ready to meet your personal needs. These may include but are not limited to the following:
- A single duffel bag or small rolling suitcase where you can place all your things.
- Complete hair and makeup kit
- Any type of dance shoes - bring extra in case your original pair breaks.
- Snacks
- Bottled water
- Tissues and baby wipes
- Hosiery
- A two-piece

Audition Elements
Below are some important audition elements to expect:
1. Initial Welcome
During the audition, you will be oriented as to how the day will run. The choreographer and other important personnel will be introducing themselves.
2. Choreography
Most likely you will be taught a group dance routine. Some teams prefer group routines while some would opt for a solo routine choreographed by you, the candidate. This is where the benefit of joining a prep class comes in. You'll definitely have some degree of advantage over those who haven't joined a prep class especially if you're not a fast learner on dance moves.
3. Practice Time
Yes, you'll be given time to practice and master your dance steps before the judges actually see you perform. Don't forget to do some stretching!
4. Veteran Candidates
Team veterans usually don't show up during the first round and automatically do at a later round. This may surprise and intimidate new candidates. These veteran candidates are highly noticaeable since some teams require them to wear a themed apparel. Instead of comparing yourself to veterans, observe them and learn how they carry themselves. Most of all, focus on delivering your best.

5. Media Interviews
Expect to see media during the big day - especially if you're auditioning for a huge team. So if you're keeping your audition a secret, remember that it's very possible for your family and friends to see you on-screen.
Judging
In general, candidates will be judged according to their physical fitness, appearance, dance skills, and personality. Put in mind that you should present yourself in a way that judges would be able to see you as an ideal ambassador to your dream team.
Review what you wrote in your application. You may be asked similar personal questions. Be prepared to explain further. Deliver your answers in an interesting and relaxed manner.

Make sure you do your homework. Research your team's history/facts and watch performance videos of the team's cheerleaders. Last but not the least, always carry yourself in a professional way and HAVE FUN!
