Why You Cannot Out-Exercise A Bad Diet (And What To Do Instead)

We talk about exercise and healthy eating here at Pro Cheer Life all the time. There's a reason for that: Food and physical activity go hand in hand so you can achieve a fit body that's audition ready and game day ready.

Today, I want to discuss an important topic and that's about why you can never out-exercise a healthy diet. I see a common problem among us in general: We justify our guilty food indulgences by telling ourselves that we can burn all that carb the next day. But rarely does that happen, right?

Why can't you out-exercise an unhealthy diet?

My straightforward answer is this: It's much easier to eat all that junk in one sitting than it is to get rid of them. Remember that weight loss is achieved by burning more calories than you consume. Let's say you ate four slices of pizza that has 1,140 calories. Burning those will take you at least 60 minutes.

Here's another thing you should know: You're not only dealing with calories, but also the nutrients and ingredients found in that food. Does it contain more healthy fat and protein to promote weight loss? Is it full of harmful sugar substitutes? Everything in your food affects your energy, thoughts, and feelings.

What must you do instead?

If you find yourself making a habit out of eating junk and exercising, stop. Follow these tips instead:

1. Focus on your food.

Exercise alone cannot drive significant weight loss. Food is a huge component of your day -- you eat three or more times. The right fuel matters. The fact that some dietary approaches like the ketogenic diet or a simple low-carbohydrate diet speed up fitness results tell us that food choices drive weight loss. Eat more whole foods, eliminate anything processed, and don't snack mindlessly.

2. Use a clever mind hack.

You can train your mind to hate junk food. There are many creative ways to do that. Here's what I do (and you can use this hack as well!): I ask myself, "If this food would be delivered to my body through a nasogastric tube, will I still want to have it?" This thought-provoking question makes you realize that if you never had the chance to taste food, you'd definitely care more about getting proper nutrients.

3. Make healthy food swaps.

A simple way to start eating better is to make food swaps. For example, instead of drinking canned fruit juice, eat real fruit. Instead of white bread, go for whole-grain. Make steamed fish instead of fried fish. You get the idea.

Conclusion

Work your way to a fitter body by making food and exercise complement one another. If, right now, you're not getting the results you seek because of a bad diet, follow the tips I shared. I want you to succeed on your big day!
