10 Tips for Taking Online Dance Classes
The pandemic is still going on and social distancing measures are still being observed. That means for aspiring pro cheerleaders like you, attending physical dancing classes isn’t an option. But you can still learn how to dance through an online dancing class.
The problem is, how can you learn well without seeing your instructor face-to-face? Follow the tips in this article.
1. Attend classes in a spacious and empty part of your home
This will prevent you from tripping over or hitting other objects during class. Your instructor will appreciate this because they will become less distracted by the items behind.
2. Place your camera properly
Every instructor needs to have a clear view of your body to point out your dancing errors and teach the right way effectively. Make sure your camera placement isn’t tilted and captures your whole body while not making you appear too small in their view.
3. Know when to choose a live vs recorded class
A recorded class is good if you’re a quick learner that doesn’t need too much spoon-feeding. However, if you’re the type who isn’t quite sure of what you’ve learned and asks a lot of questions, a live class will be good. This is because your instructors can easily and immediately provide feedback.
4. Research your instructors
If you have chosen a dance style to showcase at the auditions, find the right instructor that focuses on that particular style. Read their reviews. Check their schedule if it fits your free time. More importantly, know which platform they choose to hold their classes and what type of classes do they offer.
5. Don’t forget to warm up and cool down
Some online instructors will forget to initiate a warm-up. Others will start the class with the assumption that all have done their warm-ups already before the class started. After class, cooldowns will also be treated the same. So take initiative. Warm-up and cooldown without the need to be asked.
6. Foster a positive attitude
Not everyone likes online learning/classes. If you’re one of the people who doubt its effectiveness, then you’ll really find it hard to learn through this system. Just think of it as a temporary fix to the situation that we all face right now. Have fun as you do in an actual physical class.
7. Record your class if you want to
There might be sessions where you really have difficulty learning a move. And, you think asking for more extra tutoring might bother your instructor. You can use a screen recording program for this so that you can review the difficult part of the class again and again.
8. Ask for feedback from your instructor
Ask your instructor how well you’re doing and don’t be shy. Some of these dance teachers will be too busy tending to your other classmates and might forget checking up your progress. Speaking up during a session or a polite private message after every class will be enough.
9. Set goals
Don’t just settle to achieve your instructor’s goals for the glass. Some teachers will only focus on movement accuracy and keeping balance. You must have goals of your own like being able to jump and kick higher.
10. Dresscode
You might forget to wear proper workout or dancing attire when you’re in your home and attend a class in your jammies. Keep this point in mind. Wear appropriate dance class clothing like your long tights, tank tops, and workout shoes.
Learning dance moves through the internet can be quite challenging because the feel is really different from a face-to-face class. The same goes with the instructors. To make your online dance class work, listen closely to what your instructor says and remember them well. Don’t forget to place your camera in a good position to help your instructor get a better view of your progress. Have fun and don’t stress it out!
