5 Lessons Game of Thrones Can Teach You about Pro Cheer Prep and Auditions
Hey, aspiring pro cheerleaders! If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones like myself, you probably know that the eighth and final season will return on April 14, 2019. Whether you watch the show or not, I’m here to tell you Game of Thrones has a lot of things to teach when it comes to preparing and making your pro cheer team. So here are five important GoT lessons that apply in professional cheerleading which you should keep in mind:
1. You win or lose.
When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or die. This is one of Cersei Lannister’s famous lines in the show. In professional cheerleading auditions, while hundreds of candidates audition for their dream team, unfortunately, only a selected few can land a coveted spot. A lot of candidates get cut off during the preliminary round.
While there’s no telling who, the only things you can do are to trust the criteria and work on important aspects of yourself -- your fitness, dancing, appearance, audition attire, and public speaking. (Read: Top Things You Should Know Before Pro Cheer Tryouts)
2. You need books.
If there’s one GoT character who loves reading, that’s Tyrion. He once said, “A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge. That’s why I read so much,” You see, knowledge is essential if you are to have a winning audition.
Knowing your cheer team’s style, audition requirements, and the sport itself will guide you. If this is your first time to audition and you need guidance on how to prepare and essential audition tips, I have written a book for you. 3. Don’t be afraid to try new things.
Remember when Daenerys ate a raw stallion’s heart? The path to becoming a professional cheerleader requires you to leave your comfort zone. I know it can be scary to first-time candidates, but believe me, the experience is worth it.
Whether you make the team in the end or not, the fact that you opened yourself to new challenges and opportunities lets you live a life of no regrets. Remember: Fear doesn’t accomplish anything!!!
4. Admit that sometimes, you don’t know.
You think you know everything about my world, but you know nothing. This is a phrase Ygritte says many times to Jon Snow to make him realize how naive he is.
Challenges such as pro cheer auditions teach you humility. Candidates who don’t make the team on the first try realize that they still have a lot of things to improve on. If you want to be better, don’t just accept your strengths. Learn to accept your limitations, too. Be brave to admit that sometimes, you know less, and that’s perfectly fine! Now, take responsibility.
5. Kindness goes a long way.
Jaqen H'ghar repays Aria for saving him and his two friends by letting her name three people who will be killed. If you’re planning to audition, now is the time to make amends with people whom you’ve hurt or offended in the past.
I personally know of many situations where, as one of the judges, we cut someone at auditions because we had the inside scoop about the person’s inappropriate attitude or behavior. Being kind and polite will reward you in the end.
Let these Game of Thrones lessons help you make the team this year!!!
