Top Things You Should Know Before Pro Cheer Tryouts
Having judged at several professional cheerleading auditions and as a former professional cheerleader myself, I know what it takes to succeed (and fail). Preparation is key. The earlier you prepare, the more audition material you'll master.
If you're thinking of auditioning this year or next year, start right now. In this blog post, I'm going to give you a list of things you must keep in mind that will improve your preparation. Read on.
1. Take dance classes
The Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders, for example, consider dance experience as a huge plus when deciding which candidates to accept. Actually, it's not just the MVC, but most teams in general -- the NFL, NBA, and semi-pro teams. Let me just say that DANCE EXPERIENCE is important. Take dance classes. Learn the techniques of ballet, hip-hop, and jazz. Spend your free time watching the dance moves of your dream cheer team. There are many YouTube videos to watch.
2. Prepare yourself mentally
Athletes follow a lot of mental preparation strategies to deliver the best performance on the field. Being mentally prepared as a pro cheerleader candidate helps you to stay calm under pressure. It increases your focus so that you can effectively block out distractions and get the work done.

3. Nourish your body
Professional cheerleaders may have different heights and figures, but they're all fit and healthy. A big part of your audition preparation is making sure that you are physically fit, toned, and have high stamina and endurance. If you haven't, start adopting an exercise routine. Reduce your intake of sugar-laden foods and fast foods. Eat more whole foods. Have a healthy sleep schedule.
4. Audition prep classes
Just because you have read pro cheer guides like this blog post or have watched videos of your dream cheer team, doesn't mean you're 100% ready. Most teams hold advance prep classes that teach you audition material, make-up tips, and more preparation pointers. While these prep classes may not be required, I highly encourage you to sign-up for them. I promise that if you do, you'll walk out of the prep class more confident and knowledgeable.

5. Team requirements and expectations
Every pro cheer team, months before the preliminary auditions, publish a list of things they require from pro cheer candidates. You can see these requirements on their official website (audition page). Most often, they will mention their age requirement, what to wear, what to bring, and what you can expect if you make the team. At this point, anticipate the necessary adjustments to make -- your schedule, relocating to the place, work-life balance, etc.
Focus on these important aspects before pro cheer tryouts. We have more blog posts on this topic here at Pro Cheer Life -- better check them out!
