Thinking about auditioning for next year’s professional cheerleading tryouts? Whether you didn’t make it this year or it’ll be your first time, you need a simple checklist of to-do’s to help you get ready. Working on the things on the list below will surely boost your chances of succeeding.

1 - Get dance training, especially Jazz and Hip-Hop.

All dance teams, especially the NFL and NBA, require candidates to have a good background in dance. Jazz and Hip-Hop movements are common in professional cheerleading. Ballet is also great. Be sure to sign-up for a dance class near you. It’s never too late to train yourself to dance!

2 - Workout at home or the gym.

Professional cheerleaders are lean and strong. Work on reducing your body fat if needed. Yes, I’m talking about becoming the “fittest” version of yourself! Commit to specific days of the week for moderate to intense full body workout. Don’t be afraid to lift weights aside from doing cardio.

3 - Be at least 18 years old.

A minimum age of 18 is one of a dance team’s basic requirements. You can find this piece of information on the team’s audition page. They usually specify a month in which you should be 18 years old. When it comes to the maximum age limit, teams don’t indicate this.

4 - Study the ideal look of the team.

Every NFL or NBA dance team has preferences in terms of hairstyle, hair color, lip color, and accessories. For example, the NFL Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders currently use red lipstick. Pay attention to these details and let them guide you on your audition day look. To know your dream team’s look, visit their website and social media pages.

5 - Practice applying makeup.

Lipstick on your teeth, overly pink cheeks, a cakey face… you don’t want to look like an amateur (or a clown) on the big day. As early as possible, experiment with different makeup products. Figure out what works best for you and that blends well with the team.

6 - Start a healthier diet that supports your weight loss goals.

Not every “fitness food” appeals to you, which is why you have to find the perfect ones that meet your nutritional needs - at the same time are weight loss friendly. But as a general rule, I would suggest that you start eating clean. Eating clean means prioritizing more whole foods. These are vegetables, fruits, and good sources of protein. Cut back refined carbohydrates and anything that comes from a bag.

7 - Watch videos and photos of the previous tryouts.

While teams put up details of the upcoming tryouts and things to expect, it’s always helpful to get an actual look and feel of the process. That said, look at content from the previous auditions. Teams usually feature these on their site. They have a gallery of their best audition photos and videos. Take, for example, the New York Jets Flight Crew. Some teams even put up a section of the interviews.

Conclusion

Remember that the most important part of the preparation process is to HAVE FUN. Find meaning in what you do. Start as early as possible. Now, if you must.
