8 Post Workout Hygiene Tips You Should Follow
Part of the pro cheer life is exercising regularly to get fit and stay healthy. And whether you’re a current or aspiring pro cheerleader, workouts are a must. Some of you workout at the gym and others exercise at home. While it may be common knowledge that gyms are at a higher risk of containing germs, homes share the same amount of risk as well.
This is because of sweat and sweating is normal. The other thing that’s normal is that germs thrive and multiply in damp areas. Usually, these damp areas are places where we sweat on, like the gym floor, workout equipment, and our workout clothing.
To avoid getting sick, keep a clear healthy skin, and stop the spread of bacteria, follow these after-gym session tips.
1. Clean your equipment
May it be a treadmill, barbell, yoga mat, or gym equipment, always remember to disinfect them. First, wipe the sweat off. Germs stay and multiply on moist, dark, and cool surfaces. Then apply a disinfectant and let it dry off. Pay special attention to rubber parts.
2. Change your clothes and wash them immediately
It might be economical and fashionable to keep wearing your gym clothes after a workout. But I tell you, it only exposes you to the risk of having acne and yeast infections.
Always carry spare clothing. Bag your sweaty clothes in plastic. Take your instagrammable photos during your resting time in between sets and not after your workout.
3. Take a bath
If you workout at home, then good. Sweat is normal. But, if you don’t wash your skin right away after a session, you’re going to have acne. Sweat blocks your pores which allows the growth of bacteria.
Another thing: If you’re showering at the gym, wear flip flops. You’ll never know what kinds of germs are on damp surfaces like common bathrooms and gym locker floors.
4. Sanitize your fitness kit
Don’t just settle on washing your equipment. Clean your headphones, earphones, tumblers, and your phone as well. An alcohol wipe would be perfect for this. Just make sure to not wet the buttons and other electronic compartments.
You’ve been touching a lot of equipment during your workout. Sometimes you even touch the floor. There are germs there and have transferred to your phone when you took a photo or changed your playlist.
5. Deep clean your face ASAP
It’s unavoidable to touch your face when wiping off sweat especially if you forgot to bring a face towel. Those germs that you’ve touched from the equipment you’ve used are now on your face.
But it doesn’t mean that you need a sink and a bar of soap. You can use a bottle of micellar water. Bring cotton balls with you and apply the water for a deep facial cleanser. If you want absolute convenience, then buy micellar wipes.
6. Use a mouthwash
Huffing and puffing during your exercise will dry your mouth. This causes foul breath. After your sesh, drink water and gargle a shot glass of Listerine. Or keep a mouth spray in your gym bag.
7. Use deodorant wipes
If the option of bathing after a workout is unavailable, a pre-moistened alcohol-free wipe is your best choice. Wipe the grime, sweat, and other grossness from your skin especially your pits, underboob, and cleavage.
These deodorant wipes also come with different scents. You’ll smell fresh as if you’ve just got out of the shower!
8. Bag your shoes
Another way to keep spreading germs around is to put your shoes in a plastic bag. Better yet, use a separate shoe bag. Don’t allow germs to contaminate your sports bag.
Gyms, bathrooms, and locker rooms are full of germs. So avoid touching your face after using the gym equipment. Wear flip flops in the shower. People drip sweat on the floor all the time, these are breeding grounds for bacteria as well. Put your shoes in a separate plastic bag. Strengthen your immune system and clean your equipment even if you’re working out at home.
