How to Get Rid of Back Acne for Good
Pimples can show up on any part of your body — including your back. As pro cheerleaders who spend a ton of effort into ensuring that we look our best, back acne “bacne” is bothersome. Not only are those red bumps highly noticeable, but they also itch from time to time.
What causes back acne? Most importantly, how do you get rid of it?
Causes of Back Acne
Just like acne on your face, back acne happens because of clogged pores. Excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria accumulate which causes skin irritation. Your body recognizes these as foreign material, which explains why your skin gets inflamed.
Hormonal changes during menstruation (fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone) trigger acne too. This is common among females who are no longer in their teenage years.
You might be surprised by this… But food is another cause for back acne. In a 2017 research, results showed that participants who had moderate or severe acne had a greater total carbohydrate consumption. So yes, those refined carbs in your diet could be culprits too. Foods rich in refined carbs include pasta, white rice, and sugar-sweetened drinks.
6 Solutions for Back Acne (How to Get Rid of It)
The good news is, there are simple things you can do to reduce or eliminate bacne. These involve changing some habits and using certain skincare products.
1. Use tea tree oil
One study showed that tea tree oil has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Before applying tea tree oil, do a patch test to ensure that you’re not allergic or sensitive to it. Watch out for redness, itchiness, and burning sensation. Here’s a helpful guide on applying it safely.
2. Shower after your workout
Sweat and dirt that accumulate on your back can lead to acne. That is why it’s essential to keep your skin clean and dry at all times. Here’s a pro tip: If you’re not able to shower immediately, make sure to change out of your sweaty clothes.
3. Let your skin breathe
Are you wearing workout clothes that tend to cling to your skin? Maybe that favorite sports bra of yours is the one causing the problem. Loose clothing allows your skin to breathe and not trap heat.
4. Lower your sugar consumption
Foods that are high on the glycemic index (they raise your blood glucose quickly) are likely to trigger breakouts. Clean up your diet by limiting sugar. Replace those sugary desserts and refined carbs with healthier options. Whole foods are free of harmful additives. Eat more of those.
5. Use benzoyl peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is another acne treatment that can be purchased over-the-counter. It’s commonly found in a lot of skin products such as creams, lotions, body washes, and soaps. It reduces the amount of bacteria on the skin and has a drying effect. You’ll notice peeling on the surface of your skin.

6. Stay hydrated
Drinking water impacts your skin health too. Increasing your water intake can promote natural detoxification. It also keeps your skin plump and glowy. Make it a goal to sip on water throughout the day, even when you’re not thirsty!
