4 Wonderful Homemade Body Scrubs to Exfoliate Your Skin
Living as an aspiring or current pro cheerleader can sometimes be costly in terms of maintaining your appearance.
While there’s nothing wrong with buying fancy and pre-made skin exfoliants when you can afford one, why spend precious dollars when you can make your own at home?
Let’s explore the science behind homemade body scrubs and ingredients you can use.
What Are The Benefits Of Body Scrubs?
Body scrubs remove the dead skin cells of your skin’s top layer, resulting in a smooth and lighter color. Homemade recipes include natural ingredients that help stimulate the production of collagen. This keeps your skin firm and radiant.
Since body scrubs exfoliate your skin, they help in the efficacy of topical treatments. New skin cells allow your skin to absorb more of the creams you apply as they penetrate deeper.
Massaging your skin with a body scrub is also very relaxing. This is perfect after a tiring and stressful day of workouts, auditions, or public appearances
How Often Should You Exfoliate With A Body Scrub?
While body scrub ingredients are mostly natural and organic, it isn’t advisable to exfoliate daily. This will leave your skin sensitive, dry, and irritated. Proper use and safety involves asking your dermatologist first especially if you have existing skin conditions.
Body scrub use also depends on your skin type. If your skin is dry and sensitive, you can only exfoliate once a week to once a month. Women with oily skin can use body scrubs two to three times a week.
4 DIY Body Scrubs You Can Make Right Now
1. Calming Yogurt Scrub (Creamy Soft)
In this DIY scrub, the yogurt’s probiotic content regulates pH levels to soothe irritation. The cornmeal also has gentle exfoliating properties which are very friendly overall to soothe skin.
Directions: Mix 1/4 cup of kefir or non-fat greek yogurt, 1/4 cup cornmeal, 3 drops essential oil. Apply and lightly scrub while you’re in the shower for 3-5 minutes then rinse.
2. Exfoliating Papaya & Pineapple Scrub (Sticky Pulp)
The natural enzymes and alpha-hydroxy acids found in papayas and pineapples are useful in encouraging exfoliation for rough skin.
Directions: Pulse 1/3 cup poppy seeds or chia seeds, 1/3 cup pineapple, 1/3 cup papaya in the food processor. Massage into rough dry skin as a mask and leave it on for several minutes.
3. Coffee Scrub (Oily Gentle)
The caffeine of coffee energizes and helps diminish the appearance of cellulite on your skin. The granules also help in removing dead skin cells for a younger and firm glow.
Directions: Add the 1/2 cup coffee grounds and 2tbsps of hot water to a mixing bowl with a spoon. After that, add a tablespoon of coconut oil. If you want, add more coffee grounds until you’re satisfied with the brown color. Apply in the shower and leave it for 7-10 minutes then rinse.
4. Coconut Sugar Oatmeal Body Scrub (Oily Abrasive)
If you want to focus on the dry skin areas, remove dead skin cells, and bring more moisture to them use this scrub. The coconut oil brings skin renewal while the oatmeal is a natural moisturizer. This results in total skin rejuvenation.
Directions: Put 2 to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil into a bowl. Combine them with half a cup of white sugar. Add a quarter cup of raw oats then mix again. Leave it until the oats are soft. Be careful not to leave the scrub mixed for too long that the oats become very soft. Apply and rub on dry skin areas with a circular motion for 3 minutes. Leave the scrub on for a good 5 minutes then rinse. Apply moisturizer after rinsing for maximum effect.
