Are You Preparing For Next Year's Pro Cheer Auditions? Here's How To Get Started

A lot of women who dream to cheer for the NFL, NBA, or a semi-professional team tend to believe that they need years of cheerleading experience. The truth is, you don't have to be a high school cheerleader to be able to go "pro."

But as with any goal in life, you need to be extra prepared. If you prepare well and early, you can perform on the big day with confidence. During the preparation process, you'll have the time to correct your mistakes and improve.

If you're ready to start your journey to becoming a pro cheerleader this year, I've prepared this simple guide for you. Here's everything you need to know to take the first few steps.

Get your mind right.

Do you have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset? A growth mindset gives you a can-do attitude. You are enthusiastic about your journey - what lies ahead, challenges you could face, and the transformation that will take place as you push through. Now is the time you learn to trust yourself. Know the application prerequisites.

Dance and pro cheer teams put up a list of things they look for in a candidate. Often, they expect auditionees to be at least 18 years old. You need to be a student or hold a part-time/full-time job. Being a parent is a full-time job, too! Some teams require you to attend their advance prep classes. A background in dancing is essential. Bottom line? Do your research and work with the information you have.

Take dance classes!

Dancing is a huge element of pro cheerleading. As early as now, join a dance studio in your area. Remember that pro cheerleaders dance differently than high school cheerleaders. Look for Hip-Hop and Jazz dance classes. If you're in doubt, research your dream team's dance style. If you can get in touch with someone who's connected to your dream team, that would be great.

Invest in your health and fitness.

In my book, Professional Cheerleading Audition Secrets, I share how important it is for aspiring cheerleaders to increase their fitness level. Improving your fitness will not only boost your appearance, but it will also help you dance better and have an increased level of confidence. Remember that fitness is not achieved overnight. Create and stick to a workout routine that's realistic. Eating the right foods and giving up unhealthy ones will support your exercise.

Fix your flexibility issues.

You probably already know that pro cheerleaders have high kicks - for example, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. If you are unable to do splits or your kicks are low, work on your flexibility. There are specialty classes that take you through a series of stretching exercises for greater flexibility. These classes may also develop your core and balance. Yoga and ballet classes can be very helpful too.
