Is Fear Holding You Back from Auditioning for a Pro Cheer Team?
The truth is that auditioning for a professional cheerleading team for the first time in your life can be really scary. Auditioning for the second or third time may spark fear too, especially if you think of all the possible ways you can fail again.
Your mind keeps visiting the same old thoughts each day… Thoughts like “If only I took up dance lessons when I was younger,” or “If only I was as confident and talented as her.” Whatever negative thoughts you have, here’s what you should know: Fear will hold you back from living a great life. A great life means being able to chase your dreams and live them, no matter the outcome.
Here are the lessons I learned in my experience as a former professional cheerleader. I hope that they will help you deal with your fear:
Write it down in a journal.
The first thing you need to do is write a list of your most pressing fears. If you have difficulty identifying them, try to observe your thoughts. What are your thoughts when it comes to dancing? Public speaking? Fitness? Managing your time as a professional cheerleader? Making a list of your fears allows you to work through them little by little because now you have brought them to your attention.
Accept that you won’t always get it right the first time.
I auditioned for a professional cheerleading team more than once. Each time I didn’t make it, I learned to embrace the reality that I could not force myself to “succeed” if it wasn’t the right time yet. But I also kept reminding myself that each experience is a LEARNING EXPERIENCE that takes me one step closer to my dream. So whether you are struggling with getting fitter, self-confidence, or speaking in public, remind yourself that you are not going to be amazing at it at first - and that’s okay!!!
Start small and always be improving.
When you think about professional cheerleading, do you always imagine “big things” like super tough workouts, splits, and high kicks? The problem with most of us is that we tend to forget how huge accomplishments originally start out -- baby steps. While you have big goals and want to get there the fastest possible way, grand gestures often lead to disappointment. By executing on a smaller level, you can actually get something done until all those small wins will snowball to meet your bigger goal.
