How to Stop Fearing Auditions and Enjoy the Process

A lot of women love the idea of joining a professional cheerleading or dance audition but they find the journey intimidating and nerve-wracking. I know it because I have auditioned for a pro cheer team many times in the past until I finally made it. This fear of auditions usually stems from early childhood experiences. Perhaps your peers laughed at your mistakes or you were always labeled as shy by your parents.
Whatever that past experience was, not doing something about your fears can actually prevent you from realizing your goals. So today, I’m going to teach you ways you’ll be able to overcome your audition fears and embrace the process instead.
Take deep breaths.
Deep breathing will keep you grounded whenever you’re starting to feel all anxious. It’s one of the best yet simplest ways to quickly lower your stress level. Deep breathing works by increasing the supply of oxygen to your brain and stimulating your parasympathetic nervous system. This induces a calm state.
Let go of all expectations and focus on the work.
More often than not, it’s the expectations we set for ourselves is what makes us feel burned out. No one is forcing you to become a professional cheerleader, so stop putting too much pressure on yourself! Practice your audition material, workout, eat healthily and take care of your body for the pure joy of being able to audition as an aspiring pro cheerleader with zero expectations. Sounds like fun, right?
Bring yourself into the here and now.
The moment you arrive at the audition venue, I want you to focus on the sensations around you. How does the air around you feel? How about the floor, your breath, palms, etc? Focusing on the sensations of the present moment will make you stay in the present moment and ignore all those crazy thoughts.
Create a mock audition setting.
This is an extremely useful piece of advice that will make you feel and actually come more prepared on the big day. To create an effective mock audition, research the audition process of your dream team. Preliminaries often entail learning choreography and performing that dance in small groups for the judges. Next, watch video clips of your dream team’s previous audition. You’ll be able to find these things on their website.
Take advantage of the help that is available.
Yes! Help is just around the corner, so don’t hold yourself back from asking for one. Take dance classes if you think you need to and can afford them. Sign-up for your dream team’s prep classes. Reach out to a former professional cheerleader. Get a pro cheer audition prep book. Look up free workout routine videos online.
