How To Work On Your Weaknesses (Without Beating Yourself Up)

Knowing your weaknesses in the context of professional cheerleading is as important as acknowledging your strengths. It's wrong to think that your weak areas are what will prevent you from making the team. Because the truth is, these aspects give you massive room for growth.

In the process of working on your weaknesses, for example, your public speaking, it's important to not beat yourself up. Stop saying harsh words to yourself or agonizing over a past experience that you cannot reverse. You can love yourself while you're trying to achieve your pro cheer audition goals. Here's how to improve while being more forgiving and gentle to yourself:

Seek guidance from someone in the industry.

One thing I've learned as a former professional cheerleader is that mentors are so important. You might think that you can figure it all out by yourself, but mentors have a way of stimulating your growth. Also, a mentor can connect you with like-minded individuals who can support you. Here at Pro Cheer Life, I guide aspiring pro cheerleaders through my audition prep ebook and personal emails every single week.

Remind yourself that you can always begin again.

No matter what you're trying to change in yourself, remember that you can hit the reset button every time. I know that the idea of a fresh start intimidates some people, but it's true -- every moment is an opportunity to change. Don't worry if you don't get things right the first time. Just keep pushing, keep trying. Implement what you learn into your daily practice and be patient with yourself.

Experiment with hacks.

There is always a practical, simpler, and better way of doing things. I encourage you to research hacks for dealing with your weaknesses. For instance, if your weakness is public speaking, one effective brain hack is to paint pleasant scenarios in your mind. This hack will effectively put you at ease. If your problem is finding time each day to exercise, one hack is to take the stairs often at work!

Focus on baby steps.

We need to admit that some things take more time. In a world where rushing is now the norm, it's quite easy to beat yourself up for not mastering a skill or technique in less time. Taking baby steps is the most powerful strategy for working on your weakness. Baby steps create mini victories. They develop your consistency. You can achieve a lot over time with baby steps rather than worrying about the entire thing or a future that hasn't yet transpired.

Conclusion

We have a tendency to magnify our flaws and yet we ignore them. Do the opposite: Practice self-love while working towards becoming an expert. Look outside of yourself and turn to a mentor. Remind yourself that each day is a brand new start! Research and experiment with hacks if there are any. Take small but consistent steps.
