How to Overcome Resistance and Reach Your Goals

Do you feel like it’s taking forever to achieve your goal? Are you starting to question your capabilities as someone who wants to audition for a professional cheerleading team? Do you struggle with negative thoughts and distractions?

Today, I’m going to talk about resistance. Resistance is like a huge brick wall that prevents you from doing what needs to be done to succeed. An example of resistance is you hitting the snooze button each morning even if you know how crucial it is to wake up early to exercise. Another example is swearing to yourself to reduce carbs and yet you still give in to nachos.

Whether your goal is to eat healthier, stay on top of your fitness program, or be more confident in speaking, you need to overcome resistance. That starts right here. Keep reading to learn how:

1. Acknowledge the presence of resistance.

The first step to getting past resistance is admitting that it’s there. If you ignore it, it won’t necessarily go away. Notice when you want to make excuses or feel troubled. Once you recognize resistance, you can find ways to deal with it so it doesn't grow bigger.

2. Challenge your FIRST thought.

Your first thought is always automatic. What’s dangerous is if this automatic thought is negative. Automatic thoughts are the product of your past experiences, core beliefs, and social interactions. While you cannot stop negativity from crossing your mind, what you can do is to challenge it. Ask yourself: “Is this really true?” Next, welcome a solution by asking this follow-up question: “What else is true?”

3. Change what you say to yourself.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned as a former pro cheerleader is positive self-talk. Self-talk has the power to convince you of anything. The next time you encounter resistance, tell yourself, “You can do this. You’ve come this far. Don’t quit now.” It will help to think of yourself as a close friend whom you’re trying to convince. What best pieces of advice would you tell that person?

4. Start the day knowing what you want to accomplish.

Begin each morning by taking a few minutes to envision how you want your day to go. Do you want to be able to do a 45-minute calisthenics workout? Read one chapter of a pro cheer audition prep book? Once you identify your goal for the day, think about the specific actions to take to meet that goal.

5. Be open to changing yourself.

Making your team is possible by reinventing yourself. Remember that it is in your nature to keep evolving. You only progress in life. To open yourself to change, all you need is to get started no matter what. Transformation requires showing up and doing the work until it gets easy. There is no quick fix, no overnight solution.

Conclusion

Commit to overcoming resistance right now. Be willing to step up your game if you want to become a professional cheerleader. While resistance doesn’t go away, remember that you can do something about it.
