How to Survive Your First Pro Cheer Audition

Is your dream team holding their auditions soon? If you're thinking of auditioning this year, you've probably researched tips on how to nail an audition, how to get noticed, and so on. A pro cheer tryout can be a very stressful time in your life, especially if it's your first time. For that reason, I prepared a list of six helpful tips. I want you to be the best version of yourself so you can truly shine! ✨✨✨

6 Tips to Survive Your First Pro Cheer Audition

1. Dress according to the dress code.

Every professional or semi-professional dance team specifies their audition outfit requirements. You will usually find this information on the auditions section of their website. For example, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders specifies all audition requirements and details here: https://www.dallascowboys.com/cheerleaders/auditions. Make a positive impression by following the dress code. If they want a 2-piece attire, wear a 2-piece attire. If they want skin-colored tights, don't wear the opposite.

2. Arrive on time.

Never arrive late at a pro cheer audition. Show the judges that you are punctual. Getting to the place early also gives you ample time to relax, "own the place," and build a connection with other pro cheer candidates who can be as nervous as you are.

3. Make sure that you have everything you need.

The night before the big day and before you leave the house, check that all the requirements are ready. Your team may have asked you to bring a copy of your application form, pictures of yourself, identification proof, an extra attire, and snacks. Re-read everything they specified. Make several copies of the documents you'll be bringing.

4. Take prep classes!

Most pro cheer audition prep classes are not required. While you're free to skip these prep classes, keep in mind that they were designed for a good reason -- to help you get familiarized with the team's style, routine, and the audition process. For a first-timer, prep classes boost your chances of nailing the audition.

5. Improve your dancing.

Most candidates who end up making the team are those who have a solid dance background. So, if you're not very confident about your dancing, do what you can to improve it. Take dance classes! Watch some dance videos of last year's tryouts and home games. Stretch every day. When you practice, do it in front of the mirror.

6. Avoid food and drinks that ruin your performance.

A sugar-filled meal will spike your blood sugar and make you feel tired in the middle of the day. You want to be 100% alert and energetic. It's also best to avoid caffeine as this will upset your stomach. Eat a home-cooked meal that's rich in healthy fat and protein to help you stay full and awake.

Conclusion

You should also remember to relax. Trust what you've learned so far. Trust the process. Trust yourself! The things you do today will contribute to your audition-day performance... so prepare right and as early as possible. If you need more audition tips, check out these articles:
