Dance Audition Mistakes You Don't Want to Make (And What to Do Instead)

If you ask previous candidates about their audition experience, you're sure to hear stories of them accidentally sabotaging their performance. Curious to know what audition mistakes pro cheer candidates make so that you can avoid them? I've prepared a list below. Read on.
Late preparation
A lot of aspiring pro cheer candidates ask me, "Flavia, when should I start preparing for a future audition?" I tell them, "Now." Regardless of what you're anticipating in your life, early preparation is extremely important. People can tell you what to expect but when you're there, but nobody's going to save you except yourself! Now is the time to start eating right, decide what audition outfit to wear, and learn jazz and hip-hop.

Not attending prep classes

Prep classes... what are they? Prep classes are paid sessions that are held in preparation for a dance team audition. In a prep class, participants are usually taught the actual routine during the tryouts. Important people will be there such as the dance team director and veteran cheerleaders. You're going to have a Q&A session with them and you'll also be given great audition day tips. Sometimes, one participant is chosen to proceed to the final round. So you see, even if prep classes aren't required, they're worth it for all these reasons.
Choosing colors based solely on your favorites
Auditions are not the best time to wear something just because IT'S YOUR PERSONAL TASTE. Colors must flatter your skin tone. If you're dark skinned, stay away from a brown and black-colored audition attire. Pick colors that will pop against your skin such as pastels. If you're fair-skinned with warm undertones (green veins beneath your skin), you'll look great in oranges and olive greens.
Not researching the dance team
You want the judges to see you as a potential team member. With that, it's important to research the team you're auditioning for. What are the things you should know about the team?
- Their ideal look
- Dance techniques/routine
- Time commitment if you make the squad
To aid in your research, visit the team's website, watch YouTube videos, and check their social media pages (especially Instagram).
Not working on your weakness
No pro cheer audition candidate is perfect. We all have areas we need to improve on. The biggest mistake you'll make is not working to improve these weak areas. For example, if you lack dance experience, better enroll in dance classes with a focus on jazz and hip-hop. If you think you need to lose weight to look good in a two-piece outfit, get a fitness trainer.
