Here at Pro Cheer Life, my ultimate goal is to help an aspiring professional cheerleader like yourself ace the tryouts. A lot of women who dream to be part of a pro dance team ask me, “Flavia, they say that to be a pro cheerleader, you need to be the total package. What does that mean, exactly?” Together, let’s enumerate the areas that require preparation so that you show up at the auditions confident, fearless, and positive.

How to Be the Total Package and Finally Go Pro

1. Get your mind right. Ask yourself, “Do I really want to become a professional cheerleader?”

Anything you want to achieve, whether it’s getting fitter or improving your dance skill, can be achieved if you set your mind to it. Before the preparation process starts, ask yourself if this is really what you want. To be a professional cheerleader isn’t just about bringing excitement to the crowd. It’s about teamwork, hard work, discipline, and maintaining high standards for yourself as a woman.

2. Get the pro cheer look.

Beauty and fitness are two very important physical aspects in professional cheerleading. During the first round of the auditions, the judges will be evaluating your appearance based on:

  • How toned you are - Arms, stomach, legs. Adopt an exercise regimen to meet your fitness goals. Eat healthily!
  • Your hair - Is it professionally styled? Does it reflect the hairstyle and color of the team?
  • Your makeup - Does it bring out your best features?
  • Dance attire - Does it complement your skin tone? Did you follow the team’s audition attire requirement?

Make sure that you do your research. Check the dance team section (audition info) of the sports team website. Instagram is also a good social media resource to study the appearance of current professional cheerleaders. Most dance teams have official social media pages.

3. Work on your dance technique. Sign-up for local or online dance classes!

Dancing. Definitely work on your dance skill! Double time on this one if you rarely danced your entire like. Most current pro cheerleaders have taken up dance lessons since they were little. But know that it’s not too late to get started. Follow the steps below:

1 - Find out what the dance style of your team is. Most pro cheer dance teams use Hip-Hop and Jazz. Again, do your research! Head over to their website. Watch game day videos on the site or YouTube.

2 - Get formal dance training. Once you know the dance style of the team, sign-up for dance classes. Look for the nearest dance studio in your area. Nowadays, you’ll also be able to join dance classes online.

3 - Practice! practice! Practice! It doesn’t matter if you have the best dance training because it won’t work if you don’t put it into action. Allot time for dance practices even when you’re at home. Do it several times a week. In fact, I would recommend that you take videos of yourself while you dance and compare your performance with that of current pro cheerleaders. Embrace feedback and work hard to improve.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, you will apply these tips to become the total package. I want you to stand out on the big day. Also, study the sports league in general. Know the latest updates about the sport and your dance team. I know you can make it if you put in the work! Most importantly, START YOUR PREPARATION EARLY.
