Audition Success Tips: How to Turn Fear into Motivation

Fear is one factor that keeps people from achieving their dreams. For aspiring dancers and pro cheerleaders, that dream is to be able to make their team. Fear is also a normal part of life, for it is our way of guarding ourselves against all possible threats. After all, there are things that we should really fear, such as sharks and heights.

A lot of aspiring performers are afraid of putting themselves out there because they might make mistakes. I know that the last thing you’d want is to humiliate yourself in front of the judges. But are you also aware that you can use fear to take yourself closer to your dream? I’m sharing 4 ways you can use fear as your source of motivation.

Focus on what you can control.

True, there are a hundred different things that are beyond your control. For example, you cannot prevent certain distractions from happening - distractions that interfere with your audition preparation. During unexpected events, fear can start creeping in.

What if this happens again and ruins my practice schedule? Let me tell you that while you cannot control events in your life, you can control how you react, think, and feel. Be busy controlling the things that depend on you, and don’t invest your energy on the rest.

Examine your underlying beliefs.

Most of the beliefs you hold in life are unconscious. Majority of these beliefs were formed by your childhood experiences. Some of these experiences impacted you in a positive way, while other experiences did the opposite.

Start checking your beliefs right now so you can decide once and for all whether those beliefs are working in your favor. I want you to sit down and ask essential questions such as: Where did this belief come from? Does this belief help with my future audition or not? What belief can I use to replace this old limiting belief?

Do not ignore your fear.

This is a common mistake among many aspiring performers who feel afraid: They try to ignore it. Fear is nothing to be ashamed of. You can only deal with fear effectively and minimize its effect on you if you do this: Acknowledge that it exists.

Locking up your fears will cause them to appear every now and then. By putting your fears in the spotlight, you can make a plan of action. You can do something about it - like chasing your dreams despite the fear. You know that the fear is there, but you also know that you can get to the next level by doing the work that’s necessary.

Practice gratitude every single day.

No matter where you are in your audition preparation, I want you to start being appreciative of everything. Take time to appreciate the nice weather because it means you can go to the gym, daily challenges that increase your creativity, and an encouraging message from a friend who believes in your goals.

Gratitude keeps you hopeful of positive things to come. It keeps you grounded. Most importantly, it allows you to trust that you have what you need at this very moment. Good things happen if you are grateful.
