Dream of Becoming an NBA Dancer? Read These Helpful Prep Tips

When it’s audition time, the secret to making an NBA dance team is to come prepared. Tryouts can be stressful and memorable for ladies who aspire to perform on the sidelines. Just because this is your first time, doesn’t mean you can’t succeed. I want you to win, and that’s why I’ve prepared this guide for you.

5 NBA Dancer Audition Tips

1. Apply makeup primer.

Many women who audition make the mistake of skipping makeup primer. Primer is the secret to keeping your face smooth and ensuring that makeup lasts longer. Since you’re going to work up a sweat when learning and performing routines in front of the judges, you also need a primer to prevent an oily look.

When applying a primer, start at the center of your face and work your way outwards. Choose a primer that addresses your skin problems or concerns such as dark spots, oiliness, and dryness.

2. Work on your strength and stamina.

NBA teams are looking for women who can keep up with long hours of performance. They also appreciate a toned body. Aim for lean and strong - not skinny! To achieve the strength and stamina of an athlete, engage in a weight lifting program that targets several muscle groups. Jog, run, or use the elliptical regularly for at least 30 minutes a day.

3. Eliminate bad sugar from your diet.

I know, removing sugar is a tough challenge but you should be up for it to speed up your weight loss. Let’s be clear here that we are referring to the bad “refined” sugar found in soda, white bread, and desserts. Too much of refined sugar breaks down the lean muscles you’ve been working so hard to build.

If you need something sweet (especially after a long day or when you’re stressed out), aim for natural sources. Healthy examples include bananas, a whole orange smoothie, and apple slices with peanut butter.

4. Practice dancing with your hair down.

It’s important to mind your hair when you dance. NBA dancers perform gracefully with their hair down. There is a lot of hair flips involved but these great dancers are able to do them while making sure that hair strands don’t land on their face or lips. Here’s an amazing video of the Warriors Dance Team to show you:

You won’t get a perfect hair flip the first time, and that’s why you should practice, practice, practice!

5. Get some dance training.

A lot of women who audition for a professional cheerleading team have a background in dancing. If you don’t normally dance, I highly recommend that you sign-up for dance classes. Learn the basics of hip-hop, jazz, and ballet. Not only will you get to familiarize yourself and easily memorize the routines taught in the auditions, your flexibility, and overall fitness improve.
