Feeling Insecure About Your Dancing? Build Your Confidence With These 6 Reminders
The courage to dance in front of a crowd without feeling doubtful is something that performers cannot achieve overnight. It’s even harder to do it in front of judges or in an arena especially when your dance experience is not that long.
While there are no shortcuts to boosting confidence in dancing, there are techniques you can use to slowly develop a sense of self-trust. Check them out below.
1. Progress at your own pace
We all start somewhere. No dancer immediately became a professional or knew how to be confident when the time came to perform on stage. Even world-class performers still feel stage fright. But they learned to overcome it by years of experience.
That’s what you need to dance with more trust in yourself - time. Take all the time in the world to learn the fundamentals of pro cheerleading and dancing. Get used to common routines. Discover new strategies to control yourself so you can perform in an arena without distractions.
2. Practice in front of those you hold dear
Confidence comes from a solid belief in yourself and your abilities. It also comes from the support of people around you. In one of your dance practices, invite someone to watch you perform. They can be a family member, friend, colleague, or significant other.
You might receive some confidence-boosting praise if you’ve been practicing for a long time now. Sometimes, a smile is already a reward. However, if you feel your efforts are inadequate, don’t worry, you can still ask the one who’s watching you to give insights about things you need to improve on.
3. Train and train
Your lack of confidence might be caused by your inadequate training. In this case, put more effort into your dance practices. As mentioned, take your time. Practice daily or twice a day. Hire a professional to teach you everything you need about pro cheerleading.
Then, ask their expert opinion about your progress so far. A coach’s word holds more credibility than someone who doesn’t know anything about dancing. But the best part of it is that whether you pass or not, you’ll still learn valuable lessons as an aspiring performer.
4. Be different
The truth about dancing is that there is no right or wrong. There is only uniformity when it comes to technical dances such as ballet, ballroom, jazz, and pro cheerleading. Because of the rules in these dance genres, you can’t help but be over-conscious about your moves. But in terms of audition freestyling, any move may score well.
What’s important is that your moves will show the attributes judges are looking for in you as a dancer. They are athleticism, flexibility, stamina, showmanship, and technique. So practice dancing with a style you’re happy to perform and comfortable with. Express your own style and individuality. Only practice and perform a taught choreography when required.
5. Dance as if you’re alone
It’s normal to feel that all eyes are on you while you perform. But it will not help you if you’re constantly thinking about what runs through the minds of your audience as you dance. To keep your confidence while practicing or performing, train your mind to think that you’re dancing on a stage in an empty hall. Not aiming to impress anyone, just doing it for the sake of art.
Sometimes, it becomes a requirement to make eye contact with your audience while you’re on stage and it can be a paralyzing experience. In these settings, try to think about your audiences as fruits and vegetables sitting on chairs, lifeless. It’s one of the hacks orators use to focus on following their plans for performing.
6. Wear something that makes you confident
Last but not least: What you wear impacts your confidence. We all care about appearances. So when you practice and perform a freestyle or choreography, always wear clothing that goes well with your style and the type of dance you’ll execute.
Time is the most valuable asset we humans have to achieve perfection. Use your time wisely to learn the basics for dancing your favorite styles. Practice your routines with passion and hard work. With proper preparation, you will find it hard to doubt yourself when you’re at the stage and arena.
