How to Balance Your Pro Cheer Duties and Your Day Job Without Burning Out

Having a healthy balance between your career as a professional cheerleader or dancer for a sports team requires a bit of planning and effort. It’s no secret that athletes like us lead busy lives. In fact, I recently read the article “The Life of a Falcons Cheerleader” which talks about Hanna’s experience as a veteran cheerleader where she juggles her responsibilities as a team member and supply chain leader. This inspired me to write this post for anyone who needs advice for success without compromising their physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Know that you will have to make some sacrifices, especially at the beginning.

This doesn’t mean that you have to give all of your time to both aspects of your life and ignore the rest. However, when you’re still in the process of adjusting — for example, if you just made the team — you might have to prepare yourself for situations where you need to say no to parties and invites, especially if they fall on days of team practices and events.

Organize your schedule.

Being organized prevents obligations from slipping through the cracks. This is why, when you have a jam-packed schedule, it’s more than necessary to take advantage of lists and reminders. You can physically write them down or download an app. At least have a calendar that gives you a full visibility of your schedule.

Manage your free time well.

Once you’re able to figure out how much free time you have, make sure to maximize it. This means setting clear intentions on how you’re going to spend it. What activities will you do? Free time can be used as opportunities to pursue a hobby, bond with your family, catch up with friends, increase your learning by taking classes, and even starting a new business. Disconnecting by spending time in nature or simply turning off your devices for an entire day will allow you to return to your pro cheer life and day job feeling refreshed and able to face any challenge.

Develop a flexible mind.

You may have planned out your schedule, but sometimes unexpected things happen — for example, you’ve been called to cover for an absent co-worker. It’s important to adapt to these kinds of situations when they happen. A flexible attitude is about embracing how things are as they happen instead of getting defensive, which creates stress and anxiety.

Final Thoughts

As a final tip, take good care of your health. Struggling with health issues due to a lack of sleep and poor eating habits will make it difficult for you to balance pro cheerleading and other life responsibilities. If you want to thrive, make health a priority.
