How to Be More Confident in Yourself as an Aspiring Pro Cheerleader

You could do so much more in your journey to becoming a professional cheerleader if you had more self-confidence. Having confidence in yourself allows you to overcome most, if not all of your fears. For example, the fear of speaking in public or dancing in front of thousands. With self-confidence, you have the drive to stretch your limits because you know you are capable of anything.

If you think you need to grow your confidence, here are my eight tips for you. Use them to address any area in your pro cheer audition prep.

1. Challenge yourself to try something new.

Increase your sense of competency by trying out a new experience that aligns with your preparation. It can be a workout that will really test your limits or a group fitness class where you can get feedback.

2. Question your negative thoughts.

Do you immediately accept your thoughts as truths? Why not question them? You might just realize that your inner dialogue is making you believe that you're inadequate. Consider other ways you can look at the situation. Change your perspective. Ask yourself if your doubts will matter in five years.

3. Write down your pro cheer prep accomplishments.

Take out a pen and write down every effort you’ve made. You have come this far. Your accomplishments should make you realize that you are capable of more. I would recommend that you keep a journal. This will help you keep track of and appreciate your progress.

4. Overcome the fear of rejection.

The worst possible thing that could happen to any pro cheer candidate is to be rejected. But focusing on your fears only cripples you. Instead, focus on what you want. Phrase your goals in terms of what you aim to achieve.

5. Simplify your pro cheer prep.

Maybe you’re setting goals that are too high. Unrealistic expectations set you up for failure. While you must challenge yourself to be better, be selective of these challenges. You can only handle so much. Simplify by nailing the basics. Eliminate distractions. Get real advice from people who’ve been on the same journey.

6. Create a positive environment for yourself.

It’s true that on some days, we feel negative. All these negative assumptions and even unkind words from people around us destroy our hope. Fill your mind with positive energy. Get an inspiring book. Spend time in nature. Practice positive visualization. Surround yourself with like-minded people.

7. Stop worrying about what other people think.

Build a healthier relationship with yourself by quitting being anxious about being liked. Remember that you cannot live up to everyone’s expectations. Be who you want to become from your own perspective -- a professional cheerleader. Mind your own business; focus on your personal journey.

8. Do what you say you will do.

You need to be able to trust yourself first in order to grow your confidence. This entails following through on your plans. If you told yourself that you would research your dream pro cheer team tomorrow, make sure you do it. Right now, can you confidently say that you’re reliable?
