How to Dance Better and with More Power
Do you have a pro cheerleader that you look up to? What got you into admiring her?
If you notice, the best pro cheerleaders (and dancers) are the ones that blow you away whenever they perform. They command the crowd. You feel their energy, passion and even the emotions they exude as with every movement they make.
When dancing, it’s best to go all out.
So how do you do this?
Show your strength.
It’s a common misconception, that to be strong, you have to be big. But with dancing, size doesn’t matter.
Dancing requires strength. You dance bigger when you’re stronger. I suggest doing workouts like lifting and push-ups to increase your control and power and to build your strength.
Warm-up.
When you’re working out, you have to do some stretching before and after. It goes the same for dancing. Your moves become bigger when you’re able to execute every movement completely by using your body’s full range of motion.
Don’t just do stretching whenever you have a dance class or practice coming up. Stretch regularly so you’re able to extend your reach. Stretching, of course, helps improve your flexibility. When you’re more flexible, your start and endpoints become more wide, which makes your movements bigger. This also helps you reduce the chances of getting a dance-related injury.
Give performance level even at practice!
You know how they say, “Live this day as if it is your last”. It’s like that in a sense.
Always perform like it’s showtime.
Sure, for the first few practices, you might have to always look at the choreographer and get in touch with the music. You might also be more conscious and mindful of the people around you, but once you already get the hang of it and you have memorized all the steps by heart, give it all out even if you’re just practicing. Move the way you want it to look when you’re in the audition already and later on, actual pro cheerleading performances.
Tap your core for bigger movements.
Have you ever been told by the dance teacher or choreographer to use your stomach muscles? Well, did they tell you why?
The core can keep you centered and gives you more stability. As an aspiring pro cheerleader, whether you have danced before or not, it’s important to learn to use your core muscles when dancing as this helps spread out the energy to the limbs. It will give you a good foundation for dancing.
When abs are used, it lightens the work for the other muscles and maintains your body’s efficiency and keeps you from getting sore quickly. If your core needs some work, it will feel strained and tensed. One great way to strengthen your core is by doing plank hold or crunches.
Focus and connect.
The audience will want to connect with you. When you pass the auditions and head on to become a pro cheerleader, the audience will want to feel the excitement and you need to send them that message. It doesn’t mean that you always have to be looking at them, but whatever emotions the dance calls for, show it. Your audience will shift their focus on your face, your movements and even on where you’re looking. Look where you have to look and the audience will follow.
Lastly, be confident and committed!!!
Exude confidence with every movement and facial expression. Believe in yourself and your performance. Whatever the music is, immerse in it and show the audience that you can feel it so they can feel it too. Show how authentic you are with the way you move. Be whatever the moment calls for and let your audience believe you.
