How to Improve Your Relationship with Food (And Boost Your Fitness)

We’ve been talking about the best workouts and exercise techniques to manage your weight before you become a professional cheerleader. Today’s going to be a different yet interesting topic: your relationship with food. Your relationship with food is a good place to start if fitness is what you’re after. You can have the best fitness instructor and best daily workouts - but if you’re still battling with poor eating habits, workouts can only take you so far.

Understand that eating is an opportunity to nourish your body.

The first thing you should do is grasp the fact that eating is a gift. It’s a chance for you to fill your body with the right nutrients so you can perform your very best in all aspects of professional cheerleading. This includes your dance performance, physical appearance (beauty), self-confidence, and thought processes. Once you understand that to eat is not a restrictive experience, you begin to choose healthier options.

Have gratitude for your food.

Did you know that having a grateful heart actually improves your eating habit? How you feel about the food on your plate influences weight loss. Think about the story that took place before your food reached your plate. Imagine farmers planting greens and harvesting them. Imagine the preparation process. If you practice gratitude on a daily basis, you will notice that your views towards food change.

Tune into your body’s signals.

To give your body the ample nutrients and calories it requires, you need to listen more to it. Specifically, pay attention to feelings of hunger and fullness. Eat when you’re truly hungry - not just thirsty. Don’t mistake thirst for hunger. Stop eating when you’re comfortably full - not after everything on your plate is finished. Your body communicates with you. Listen to its messages and you will be more in control.

Stop making social situations difficult.

If you’re suffering each time a social event that involves eating happens, that’s your fault. Food will always be part of relationships. It’s important that you don’t allow food to get in the way of your social life. To ensure that social gatherings still become a positive experience for you, simply choose the best food options. For example, if a chocolate cake and green salad are served, choose the green salad. If everything looks high-calorie, eat a smaller serving instead of resisting everything or overindulging. It’s as easy as that.

The bottom line is not to be too rigid or restrictive. Be appreciative. Food is a blessing and you can use it and situations to your advantage. Here’s to a healthy weight loss! For more tips on health and fitness, check out the following posts:
