How to Make Healthy Food Choices During the Coronavirus Pandemic
The pandemic is already stressing all of us out. While the majority of the world is quarantined in their homes and outdoor activities are restricted, some people can resort to eating out of stress or out of boredom.
To make matters worse, we choose comfort foods that can be unhealthy, leaving us vulnerable to infections and diseases. Let’s fight this pandemic and flatten the curve not just by socially distancing alone but by also making beneficial food choices.

1. Don’t give yourself the choice of unhealthy food
Readily available stocks at home can be a common culprit for unhealthy food choices. On your next trip to the grocery, don’t buy a single piece of junk food or anything unhealthy. That includes sweet treats, processed meat, high-calorie food, and carbonated drinks. Buy veggies, citrus fruits, and red meat instead.
2. Swap guilty pleasures for healthy options
Delicious treats are often difficult to ignore and that’s a fact. If you consider buying some, choose healthier alternatives instead. For example, instead of ice cream, buy yogurt. For salty, high-carb chips, buy dried seaweed and remember to drink lots of water after eating. For chocolate, buy the unsweetened variety or the ones sweetened with stevia.
3. Compensate a sugary drink with a bottle of lemon water
A can of soda or a mug of coffee can contain loads of sugar in one serving. Make it your goal to drink water throughout the day even if you've had that sweet drink. Here’s a useful tip: Add a slice or two of lemon into your water bottle to boost your immune system while flushing out toxins from your body. Even if you compensate drinking sugary drinks by drinking lemon water, please keep your blood sugar level normal by drinking sweets at a minimum.
4. Read the labels
One way to prompt yourself into eating healthily is to be aware of what you’re eating. Read the label of whatever it is you’re going to stuff in your mouth. Is it enough for your daily recommended intake? Evaluate its contents and nutritional value first before you buy it from the store.
5. Keep your meals simple
Unprocessed goods are healthier. Foods that are packed are often flavorful and tend to have a lot of harmful preservatives. Like what we mentioned in #1, buy foods that are in their most basic form. Good examples are lettuces straight from the farm or meat straight from the slaughterhouse. Another benefit of buying whole foods is that you can cook them according to your taste preferences!
6. Out with the carbs, in with protein and fiber
Instant food contains lots of carbs and calories. If you’ve stocked instant ramens, fries, beer, pasta, or bread, expect to have weight gained when the pandemic is over. If you haven’t, then you’re on the right track. Choose green leafy vegetables that have high water content. Not only are fiber-rich foods beneficial to losing weight, but they’re also satisfying to eat plus vitamins and minerals to keep you healthy.

7. Share your healthy diet plan with a partner
Make your healthy eating plan fun by challenging someone else like your spouse, a friend, or a coworker to join you. This way, you can encourage each other to stick with your quarantine resolutions and eat healthily. Having a partner also helps in holding yourself accountable when you’ve given in to a guilty pleasure. A partner will reprimand you when you’re about to eat something unhealthy.
Flattening the pandemic curve isn’t just about social distancing. Boosting your immune system by eating healthily also helps in stopping the spread of the virus and helping you feel your best.
