How to Overcome Discomfort and Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

Aspiring professional cheerleader, I have a question for you: How tough are you mentally? While a lot of women dream to dance for their favorite pro team, only a few can push beyond her “limits” and realize what she’s capable of.

You succeed when you actively seek out discomfort. Discomfort allows you to grow and attain new skills you never wish you would attain. I’d like to share what American novelist Jonathan Lethem says… “Discomfort is very much part of my master plan”.

Today, let’s discover ways to get over the fear of discomfort so that you can achieve whatever you want in preparation for the auditions - a fitter body, increase in motivation, and more.

Challenge yourself in small ways.

Tackling a massive task without taking small steps first is a way to get overwhelmed. You don’t want that. Small changes make you feel uncomfortable enough but ease the process of accomplishing great things. Most importantly, you’re less likely to revert to your old habits. I wrote a guide on using a calendar to practice and master everything you need to master until the big day. Check out the daily steps you can take on my sample calendar.

Understand that you don’t have to be prepared all the time.

Want to know the truth? No one’s fully ready for anything. Dare yourself to get started before you even feel you’re prepared for it. Stop telling yourself, “I’ll be able to do this at the right time.” Instead, experiment with different approaches to a problem at hand. For example, if you have a super tight schedule, try working out in the morning at 5 am or as you get home from school or work.

Ask yourself questions that positively shape you.

Do you ask yourself these questions?

“What good shall I do to improve my body today?”

“What’s the next best action at this moment?”

“How will this challenge make me better?”

“What are the foods I love that love me back?”

“How will this setback help me grow?”

Or are your questions more like:

“Why am I too slow?”

“Why do I keep procrastinating?”

“Will I ever get better at dancing?”

“Am I deserving of this success?”

The first set of questions opens up your mind to great possibilities. You become wildly curious about your capabilities. The second set of questions limit you. Asking the right questions makes a world of difference in motivating you to act, no matter the circumstances.

Final Thoughts

How are you stepping outside your comfort zone today? Struggling as long as it’s geared towards growth is a good kind of pain. Embrace your potential today, act, and believe that you’ll make the team!
